It is little known the inner Imperial Palace in Tokyo is open for public tours each weekday. The tours must been approved in advance and an approval number obtained. we booked our tour in advance over the internet and showed up with our little voucher in hand 1/2 hour earlier - which was just as well cause they ushered the group through to the visitors hall early. Going to see the Emperor for his new years viewing was strange, but fun. As we started to walk towards the entrance, we received our free Japan flags (being patriotic is a must in Japan) and after a gender segregated security check we were off.
