Visited this museum with 2 elderly parents, 3 adults and 5 children 2-6 years old. The adults all had a wonderful time. The free entry was a welcome relief and many of the exhibits are fascinating. My favorite one was a collection of Royal Trains used by among others Queen Victoria, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. My one complaint, and... more

a very good place to visit and not just for trains! there is a ferris wheel too which gives great views over the minster and river there is a huge area of stuff associated with trains - scale models of stations, sites and trains, china, signs and even an old burger package - they do have a sense of humour... more

This was our must see on a trip to York. You can visit their web site first and print off the information leaflets, eye spy games for the children, and timetable of talks and special events. The displays are super and there is a lovely shop. I particularly enjoyed the food - both the snacks and main meal had a... more

We thought the national railway museum was great. Loads to do and see, the Mallard is there and is very impressive as well as a model of the flying scotsman and tons more, very impressive. We parked in the adjacent car park which takes coins and costs £7 for all day I would get there early as it is a... more

Not really into trains more fast cars but we took the family for the afternoon. Best thing is it is free. We parked in their carpark for £7 still a good deal. Paid an extra £20 for the Yorkshire wheel and enjoyed it - even in the wind. The museum is very big now and has a lot of trains... more

I went following reviews on this site and was disapointed. It is free to get in, but it's £8-ish p/p for the york-eye, they had a 'meet thomas' when we were there at £10 per adult (kids extra), and you had to walk through the large shop to get in & out, there's also a tiny 'road train' that takes... more

I must confess a bias here, I'm a total train buff. The British Railway Museum is a must see. First of, entry to the museum is free. With very few exceptions the display locomotives are original, not recreations. This year Mallard is on display in the main room. Be sure to see one of the demonstrations of the turntable. See... more

I thought the best thing about the NRM would be that it was free but I was wrong! I'd been advised to leave a full day for it so we did just that - it stilll wasn't enough time! Just as we thought we'd finished we discovered the great hall and spent another hour in there (we would've been there... more

Like another of the reviewers, I was dragged along to this museum - (i do remember using the words 'geek museum' to describe it beforehand, lol) but it is anything but - this is an absolutely fantastic place to visit. Can't believe it's free! The trains are fascinating, loved the old Royal Train and the Mallard in particularly. You can... more
