This is a lovely place to visit, with a range of impressively-kept gardens and wooded or grassy areas to suit all. Although you can buy a map as a rough guide, just wandering about as your nose and the paths dictate will take you through areas as varied as the demonstration garden, a park-like area, and the rock garden. I have been to the Botanic Gardens 3 times at different seasons and always loved it. It is best on a nice day when the views over Edinburgh and through the wonderful trees are especially attractive. It's free to get in and a good place to picnic though the cafe also does really nice, well priced food. There are lots... more

The Royal Botanic Gardens is one of my favourite places to go in edinburgh. It's surrounded by impossibly posh looking houses which I like to gawk at on the way in, it has a wonderful cafe where you can buy Ice cream on a hot day and for cold days it has hot houses, which are also great for kids.... more

It only costs 80p to get to by bus from princes street and is only a few minuites away. Free to get it that makes it great for the budget traverler, but if you can afford to pay to go into the Glass houses there very well kept and have some amazing plants like a purple pineapple.
