This is a beautiful tower that has a true sense of antiquity and, unlike that leaning thing in nearby Pisa, true local "belongingness": in that it was built by the town's (powerful) citizens to serve their local purpose. So sturdy, so gentle (probably not always so), and so much a part of the buildings and the ongoing life-space that surrounds... more

The Guinigi Tower is probably the biggest tourist attraction in Lucca, and that's NOT saying much. Lucca is not a touristy town, it's not a museum town, it is a LIVING town, albeit 800-1000 years old! The Tower offers great views of the town, the walls around the town, and the valley and mountains around them. There are actually several... more

The Guinigi Tower is easy to see and identify from a distance because of the trees growing on the top. It also seems to be one of those places that becomes harder to find the closer you get to it, because the tower becomes lost among the surrounding tall buildings.
