Schloss Schonbrunn was the summer palace of the Habsburgs, Austria's powerful royal family. Although most summer palaces seem to be in the middle of nowhere this is not the case in Vienna. Schonbrunn is super easy to get to, just a quick ride on the U-bahn (subway), get off at the Schonbrunn stop and you are basically right outside the... more

Here are a few tips to save you from the crowds and the heat. First off, fight the instict to get an early start to get there. You and every other shmo will be there too if you go too early. Get to the palace between 3:00- 3:30 pm and buy your ticket, BUT DO NOT ENTER THE PALACE THEN,... more

We did not fight crowds nor did we have difficulty getting tickets for the tour. We actually went through on our own and stayed away from the large groups of cattle. We could stop and listen to the English guides if we wanted, but we did our own thing for the most part. We enjoyed the gardens, views and maze... more

We got there at 10.00am and although only a short queue for tickets we had a time slot of 10.30am to start the tour. Not sure what would happen if you tried to enter earlier? Yes the rooms are stunning but the whole experience was ruined by so many people - you are herded through like cattle with people pushing... more

The castle is so stunningly beautiful inside. Use the walkie talkie tour thing to find out about all the rooms and to go at your own pace. The gardens are are beautiful. There are tons of things to do, so take advantage! more

Don't get me wrong, the palace is nice. Not to sound snobby, but from what the put on display it's no Versailles (though most of the rooms are not open to the public.) If you go, you HAVE to go as early as possible. The lines even in winter are ridiculous. We got there around 10 AM, and it was... more

My friend and I did the basic palace tour (whichever one was about 10 euro) which was fairly typical. Perhaps worth it if you are really into fancy wallpaper and excessively ornate furniture but I felt like I'd seen it all before. The only thing that caught my attention were two small rooms in back that had GORGEOUS hardwood inlaid... more

I visited Schonbrunn Palace this August but went with Globus tours. The guide was excellent but the pace was too fast and we only had 20 minutes to see the rest of the palace after the group tour...I would suggest at least an hour after or before an organized tour to look at the grounds. The tour doesn't say much... more

After all the hype about this place I was underwhelmed, the crowds were incredible (I was there in fall not summer), the tour guide rushed us through. Compared to the Imperial Apartments and the other museums in town, this was one place I would not go back to. The best thing about it was the garden more

If you visit Vienna you must visit Schonbrunn Palace. It is simply magnificent. It is also very easy to get there. My advice is to forget about the hop on hop off tour, which I consider to be the poorest value I have ever experienced. Instead, get the Underground from the City Centre to Schonbrunn. The Imperial Tour costs 9.50... more
