Went to the highly coveted spot to snorkel. It was VERY crowded, lots of kids, shouting, whining, screaming. All fish must have been scared off or highly traumatized; poor visibility. The fact that kids were jumping off the cliff basically on the heads of those snorkeling below did not help. If you look for best snorkeling in Maui go to... more

This was the best part of Hawaii! My boyfriend and I went in 2006 and LOVED it! I don't know about the strong current others are talking about. We swam very easily and the water was extremely clear. Diving off of black rock was incredible! If we go back we will definately have to spend a few days at black... more

When we got to black rock in the afternoon it was very crowded and the snorkeling visibility was pretty poor. I would guess that if you go in the morning and maybe hit the north side (we were at the south side) you might have a total different experience, though. more

Snorkeling near a big wall like Black Rock is great. Gets pretty deep, currents can be strong. Was tired when we finished but it is worth it. Saw turtles, octopus, lots of fish. more

We fell in love with snorkeling at Black Rock! We went in the mornings (during Spring Break). The water was wonderfully clean and calm. The fish were plentiful. The beach was not nearly as crowded as we expected. You don't have to be a jock to swim in this area. There were children galore snorkeling and loving every minute of... more

Just a note to potential Black Rock swimmers--be judicious! I talked my husband into swimming around Black Rock from the north side to the south, just for something to do. I grew up on the beach in CA and even then this was the biggest surf I had ever swam in. It's very, very dangerous, especially toward the afternoon. It... more

Ok, finally had to snorkel at the famous Black Rock. Highly, highly overrated. I began snorkeling here in the mid-70's as a teenager, having gone back summer of 2002. Unless you are a fairly accomplished swimmer, not the place for you. Water very deep and should you get pulled around the point.......strong current. I recommend Old Airport beach which is... more

My Black Rock experience is a bit different. Four years ago my husband and I were there, and he loved jumping from the rocks with my son and his friends. He passed away April 2002, and on our wedding anniversary in Feb 2003 I scattered his ashes off Black Rock just behind the Sheraton. His face has the sun shining... more

Snorkeling here was great...clear...lots of fish...but please beware of the rip current that is at the tip and back side of Black Rock... I was having a wonderful day and got caught up in the excitment...then I began to swim back to shore and could not get around the bend...with out getting into too many of the details...I almost lost... more
