This has got to be one of the best train journeys in the world - but it's hard to get reliable information. We arrived in Riobamba on a saturday - the train runs on Sundays, Wednesday and Fridays (although around festival periods this seems to change). We went on a rainy day, you are no longer allowed to sit on top of the train and still this was a great experience! The views are wonderful, you travel through some interesting little towns and can buy tasty treats to eat when you stop in a small mountain town. If the weather isn't good, take gloves. We arrived at the station at 6.45 Sunday morning, having bought our tickets the previous afternoon, to find hundreds of gringos already crammed onto the roofs of the open wagons, and we bagged about the last two seats in the carriages at the back.
