Destination: Macedonia (former Yugoslav republic) In May of 2006, i spent 3 weeks in Skopje, Macedonia...Greece borders to the south and Bulgaria to the east. Such a culture shock, having arrived from the USA.. Upon departing the airport for downtown Skopje, i witnessed an elderly man herding his sheep along the roadside, something i don't see every day in Maine.... more

Ohrid is a nice place to spend a few days if traveling through the Balkans and Macedonia. There are old churches -- including the ruins of a 5th century basilica -- and Ohrid Lake is clean and very cooling on a hot summer day.
