Unfortunately there are very, very few cafés in Buenos Aires that are that old and so well kept. So if you are visiting Buenos Aires, you have to go there to enjoy the ambience. After reading 1,000 Places to see before you die I had to visit the Cafe Tortoni when visiting BA. We had a morning coffee with other tourists gazing at the sumptous 18th century decor - it would have been better in the evening with more people I think but I've been there, done that! more

As we have lived in Brazil since 1964, frequently we have visited Argentina and its capital, Bs. As. The tango show in the small room is much better than as if you go to one of the more commercial places in San Telmo. One can drink wine and have a snack while watching the performance. I am horrified at the poor comments about Cafe Tortoni! This is a MUST SEE in Buenos Aires. The food is reasonable considering it is a historic landmark. This is NOT just some cafe to try. We went to the Café Tortoni because a guide book I had recommended it. However, it looked like everyone there had read the same guidebook. We went around 4:00 pm and were seated at the table nearest the door since the whole place was full. The café is beautiful with the high ceilings and woodwork so it was worth seeing.... more

It's a great place to stop in for a cafecito and a churro. At night, we went to a tango show that included some folkloric dances. At $20 pesos cover (you do have to order something but no minimum) you can't beat it. Make reservations though. more

I continue to be amazed at the guidebooks that recommend this place! My husband and I first went to BA over 2 years ago and are returning this week. Take my advice, do not eat at Cafe Tortoni. If you want to check out the atmosphere, then get a drink but eat at your own risk. We both ordered a... more

Stopped in here a couple of times and each time it was smoky with slow service and very average food. Its also overpriced considering what you get in other cafes. more
