After wasting our money on 4 mansion/plantation homes in Charleston we stumbled on this place. After being so disappointed by the other homes we almost did not go inside but we are so glad we changed our minds. The house is elaborately decorated but that is what we enjoyed. The traditional Charleston homes are so stuffy and boring this was... more

First let me say that we love historic houses and architecture which is why Charleston, SC is one of our favorite destinations. We've toured many houses in this area and decided, at the last minute, to tour the Calhoun Mansion. This wonderful old house is a testament to outstanding workmanship and would have been a wonderful house to visit if... more

Having tours various houses in Charleston, this is the one we enjoyed the most. The house is fully stocked with antiques (not clutter as described elsewhere), in a very Victorian style. The grounds are also very ornate. If you like Victorian-style houses crammed full of fabulous antiques that give the "Wow" factor, then you should visit. If you want to... more

A glorious house that is ruined by the owner who has filled it with antiques to bursting capactiy. The overall effect is clutter, bad taste and an overall unpleasant feeling that the owner has more money than he knows what to do with. more

I only had two nights in Charleston, but seeing this mansion was one of the highlights. It is an awesome home, filled with awesome things. If you like house tours, this one will not disappoint. The $15 admission is right in line with what such home tours usually cost around the country. No one is getting rich on this activity... more

The home is beautiful from the outside, but when you go in you cannot find the house because the owner has filled every inch of the house with his collections from around the world. It is distracting and the lady that gave us our tour did not know very much about the house. She seemed more interested in keeping everything... more

This home is remarkable. This is a National Treasure and has been wonderfully restored. I asked about the money for the tour and I was told that it contributed to the maintenance of the home, but that all revenues from the tours and sale still fell well short of the total cost to maintain the home. Thus, I was happy... more

The Calhoun Mansion is a private residence which you can tour for $15. This is a home that showcases the owner's private collection of art and antiques. Yes, it does reflect his personal tastes and interests - doesn't your home do the same? This is not a historical museum, but it is a house full of history. If you visit,... more

It seems like the $15 admission fee goes to the owner of the house. It is not a non-profit; it is owned by some lawyer. The house if full of crap. more

Even though I read the reviews and they were correct, the house is so beautiful from the outside that I just had to see the inside. The grounds are lovely and you can wander through them for free which I would highly recommend if you decide not to tour the house. The architecture and the wood in this home is... more
