After three years of being a neighbor, we finally had a chance to go on the historic Harlem tour. I don't think anyone loves Harlem more than Neal. A true gentleman, historian and soulful voyager; he took us on a private tour from the Islamic Mosque 116th past the old Eastern European Jewish temples to the Apollo on 125th with... more

We traveled to New York on June 26, 2008 on a Historical Tour with high hopes of exposing our youth group, Griot Leadership Project, to the legacy of achievement and triumph that Harlem has provided to the world. Our hopes were met beyond our expectation. The tour guide took time to understand the goals of our group prior to our... more

My husband and I took the Harlem Renaissance walking tour on our last day in New York City and wished we stayed longer to take the other tours available! The tour leader, Neil Shoemaker, grew up in Harlem and his passion and pride for his neighbourhood shines through on this tour. There was never the impression that he was just... more

If you want the story of Harlem--then book a tour with Neal Shoemaker at Harlem Heritage Tours. Neal takes time to find out what each participant wants/expects from his tour, and then blends these threads together. He's enthusiastic, has tremendous knowledge of the area, civil rights, and history dating back to the Dutch, and is a natural storyteller. I went... more

My brother and I took my Dad to New York for the jazz, went to some great clubs, and also to the home of jazz, Harlem. We phoned the number to book the tour and were a bit worried when the person answering the phone seemed very vague and didn't know quite what we were asking for. However, within 5... more

Okay, we all know about PBT and yes, it did take a while to get the tour organized. But the wait was well worth it. Neil gave us a wonderfully guided tour of Harlem filled with stories and anecdotes. We lunched at a wonderful soul food restaurant and ended the tour with a private tour of the Apollo theatre. It... more

This was one of the highlights of our trip to NYC last week. Neil was an amazing tour guide, engaging and energetic, who is very obviously committed to his community. Neil provided a spontaneous and fun tour in a very informative and articulate manner. He was interested in our questions and was eager to engage in discourse about the history... more

Their Hip Hop tour was very fun and informative. Greg Nice was very knowledgeable on the history of Hip Hop and was also very entertaining. I will definitely check out their other tours soon!!! more

I've been taking Canadian university students to Harlem for five years now, and had the good fortune, on my very first visit, to hook up with Neal Shoemaker and Harlem Heritage Tours. Neal and his crew have been an essential part of the educational experience I have provided my students ever since. The walking tour has always been the highlight... more

Very disapointed with this tour. Definately did not measure up to all the hype. Greeted by a locked door that when opened, placed us in the middle of a stuffy disorganized pig-sty. Our tour guide seemed more interested in selling tee shirts and promoting Malcom X, Martin Luther King, jr. and Adam Clayton Powell than in providing interesting Harlem cultural... more
