Our New Orleans (We Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans)

Ask this member a question. wallace63 This list was started for when friends were visiting us in NOLA. We've kept it updated over the years and hope it will lead you to some wonderful places. (Updated October 2008)

We lived in New Orleans until 2001, and are back in town every couple months to visit friends and family. We love the Crescent City, and have had so many wonderful times there. This list is kind of our greatest hits - the places we look forward to going on every visit. It includes a lot of restaurants because, well, it's that kind of city. A wonderful and inexpensive place for breakfast in the Quarter, with amazing baked goods.
Set in the lush gardens of the Princess of Monaco Courtyard on Royal Street, this is one of the most beautiful spots in the quarter. They have a great brunch!
You can't go wrong spending a morning shopping on Royal. Some of our favorite places are the Flora Savage flower shop, the Living Room, Fifi Mahony's, and the Fredrick Guess art gallery. For some good and cheap dining, we love both Mona Lisa and Bennachin.
4. New Orleans Tours
Take one of the many New Orleans tours (haunted history, swamps, airboats, cemeteries, etc.) offered out of the National Parks Office on North Peters St. or the Welcome Center in Jackson Square.
Take a boat across the river and visit Mardi Gras World to see behind the wizard's curtain.
Home of the original muffuletta, and the best olive salad known to man. Get a half or quarter size, so you'll have room for more great food later on.
Take a walk through the neighborhoods around Tulane University and visit the botique shops and restauants along this charming little street. Be sure to stop by Maple Street Books, and the wonderful little French restaurant Ciro's Cote Sud.
Enclaves of very hip & funky boutiques, coffee houses, spas, and restaurants along a beautiful street. Some of our favorites are Sputnik Ranch, House of Lounge, Earthsavers, and Petcetera. A full list of shops is online at the Magazine Street Merchant's Association: www.magazinestreet.com
9. WWOZ 90.7 FM
WWOZ is "New Orleans' Jazz and Heritage Station." They play an incredible mix of old and new jazz, brass band, zydeco, cajun, and all the elements that contribute to the New Orleans musical collage. You can also stream the station to your computer at home or work.
Take a slow walk under the beautiful oaks through this Uptown jewel.
Get the chocolate pecan pie and an orange freeze at this must-visit diner.
Our favorite retaurant in New Orleans, hands down. They don't take reservations for small parties, so show up early and be prepared to enjoy an Abita or three until you can sink your teeth into some AMAZING food. After dinner, wander up the block and see who's playing at the Maple Leaf Bar.
For more upscale dining, try Lola's in the beautiful City Park neighborhood. The seafood paella is amazing. They only take cash, so come prepared.
D&J's is great for upscale dining, and is located just up the street from Tipitina's Uptown. Tthey don't take reservations, so come early.
15. The Gambit Weekly
NOLA's indie entertainment paper, with all the music and event listings you could ever need.
The place to be if you want to get away from the tourists and mingle with the hipster scene. There are a ton of clubs and bars, all with great live music. It's close to the Quarter, but you're best to take a cab late at night.
17. Cafe Du Monde French Market
Great any time of day, but especially late at night. Get your coffee and beignets for a little pick-me-up before heading back to the bars.
If you find yourself Uptown in the wee hours of the morning, stagger to Snake & Jakes for some laid back and poorly-lit chill out time.
Another late night classic. Get a chocolate shake and enjoy the parade of humanity.
