My husband and I spent a total of 4 nights in the "suite" on the third floor. The location was PERFECT! You can't beat the price in OSJ, and the view from our balcony was amazing. Pablo is a wonderful host- he met us and gave us directions coming in from the airport and also recommended the restaurant where we... more

I was lucky enough to come across Casa Candela on Craigslist. I have stayed in a variety of hotels and hostels... but Casa Candela was the closest thing I've found to feeling right at home. The rooms are definitely a steal and are reminiscent of rooms at places like The Standard Downtown Los Angeles. There is lots of art throughout... more

If you are young or young at heart and traveling on a budget, this is THE best place to stay in Old San Juan!! I found Casa Candela through Craigslist.com, and I'm glad I did because my trip to PR would not have been the same if I had stayed somewhere else! The hotel's owner and staff were friendly and... more

I stayed at Casa Candela last week and it was a blast. First of all, Pablo took us is with no credit card information and was not pushy at all. He's very respectful. Second, the location is amazing. Casa Candela is right behind "El Morro" which is amazing history. The locals are also friendly and mind their own business. At... more

We had a similar experience. I had a map with directions so the taxi dropped us on the correct street, but the name and address of the place is nowhere to be found. We waited awhile in the rain until we could track Pablo down and he let us in. We rented the top floor room with a terrace. The... more

First of all I need to explain that we are not picky travelers. We have camped and stayed in many basic accomodations throughout the world. We prefer locally owned lodging that provide a sense of the culture we are visiting. We stayed one night at the Casa Candela, April 2, 2008 It was a bad experience. We stayed there based... more

Sorry for the bad experience. I had a few problems while JIm was helping me. He didn't wrote the reservations and didn't gave good maintenance to the place. He is not working with us anymore and we are doing a few improvements to the rooms and terrace.I am still paying for my mistake of hiring him. Pablo

First it's important to realize that there aren't many cheap (<$100) rooms in San Juan and esp in Old San Juan. So for price this is a great deal. Found this property on Craigslist. Ended up paying $50/night for shared bathroom. Know that the property itself is a charming building with some funky art that makes for afun environment. I... more

Hi David i am sorry i wasn't there that week. I just have to say that the room where you stay is the only room in the building that is more improvised. Is the only one that doesn't have air condition or a bed. Is basically the room #16 and we only used it when is 100% full or when...

I thought this place was interesting and what a wholesome OSJ experience! The accommodations were not awesome, but Pablo and Jorge were so helpful (and so much fun) that I couldn’t think of saying our stay was neutral/average. We arrived at 5am, so the room we booked was not ready, and we had paid for one of the nicest upper... more

My boyfriend and I planned a trip to Puerto Rico during Thanksgiving 2007. Before I researched everywhere for a good hostel due to our budget but everything looked pretty bad, expensive and with terrible reviews. It took me a while to find the perfect place to stay. Until I came across “Casa candela”. Off course I looked it up for... more

I stayed at Casa Candela over Spring Break. Pablo was very accomodating for holding the reservation without my credit card info and was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Staying in Old San Juan was a real treat and I plan to visit Casa Candela again. I only suggest that fellow visitors bring a pair of shower shoes and... more
