The owner was very unwilling at the booking stage to provide any felxibility with check in times. Very unhelpful and extremely unprofessional. He came accross as very rude and I find it amazing that he considers himself capable of running a business with this attitude. The thought of staying in his establishment for two nights is not a nice one... more

I was really impressed with our stay at the Gables recently. The room was lovely, the hosts were helpful and friendly, and the breakfast was good. We also stayed at the Low Wood Hotel, and I would definitely recommend the Gables over the Low Wood, which was very disappointing. The location is great, the only draw back is parking, which... more

The Gables is in a handy location on a leafy side street off Compston Road. Many pubs and restaurants - and the bus station - are a few yards away. The public gardens - with putting green, crazy golf and pitch'n'putt - are right opposite. There are just a few spaces in the hotel's own car park, but street parking... more

My husband and I along with our daughter and her husband and two daughters have just come back from a 4 day break where we stayed at the Gables. The owners were away themselves, but we were looked after by their friends who were hosts for the week. Our room faced the front not a huge room, but had lovely... more

Unfortunately the standard of service at The Gables has fallen off significantly with the present owners. Whereas the previous two owners ran the guest house with a passion and were always friendly and helpful, the present owners only appear to have pound signs in their eyes...The owners are, in my opinion, very cold & unhelpful. Since taking over The Gables,... more

Firstly, we find it astonishing that a review has only just been written for a stay in August 2006!! It's difficult to remember last August let alone the one before last. If it was 2006, we had only just taken over the guest house and at that stage, there were no less parking spaces than with the previous owners -...

My husband & I stayed at the Gables for a night - it had been recommended by a friend. The owner was very friendly & welcoming. Our double room was very small but overlooked the recreation ground with views of the fells which was lovely. The bathroom was rediculously small and dark - the lighting terrible. The room was clean... more

Yes we were aware of the shortcomings of this room and it has now been totally refurbished including the ensuite and its lighting.

Just come back from a midweek break - used the Gables as a base for walking in the Ambleside area. Excellent location - two minutes from centre and across the road from the park. Rooms were good, spacious, well organised and newly decorated. Owners were very friendly and helpful. Food, ie breakfast was first class and set us up for... more

We stayed here for the bank holiday weekend and they were booked out completely, but you wouldn't have known every room was full and they were busy as the owners made sure you were oK and made you feel very welcome. Breakfast was served promptly and was hot and good. Certainly plenty to sustain hungry walkers! The room was lovely... more

We stayed in room #3 althought the room was a good size with a superb view. The bathroom was on the small side. The breakfast service was very good with a pleasant dining room. We would have no heistation in recommending this B&B. The location was great, in easy walking distance to the centre, but extremely quiet on an evening,... more
