Hotel Shanker is a palace; a palace built at the turn of the century by a Rana Maharaja with a penchant for French architecture, international cuisine and Eastern hospitality. It was converted into a hotel in 1964. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interior was redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world-class hotel. more » « less

Although it has seen better days and it is not perfect, the atmosphere is great. A perfect location and loads of charm. The swimming pool is clean and has a nice bar. The staff is really friendly and they'll help you if you want to plan a trip. The bartenders are very good and the bar in the hotel is... more

Spent a week staying at the Shanker Hotel and enjoyed it immensely. The building is a converted palace and looks like a brilliant, oversized iced cake from the outside. Many of the rooms have individual character with coloured tiles and friezes of mythological characters around the walls. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The Hotel Bar is a cosy... more

I stayed at the Hotel Shanker prior to and after trekking in the Khumbu valley and found the hotel fantastic. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful and most of them speak good english. The rooms are slightly older but this is what you get when you stay in what used to be a royal palace. The rooms were always well... more

It is very difficult to rate anything in Nepal against standards in other places of the world, Kathmandu is a chaotic disorganised City of many people and unlike anything in the West. The Shanker Hotel did offer a quiet civilised Oasis amongst this chaos. I stayed for two nights before trekking in to the Himalya and for one night on... more

The staff and the service was excellent. However some renovation is needed in the bathroom, otherwise everything is fine. Keep up the good service. more

found rates on tripadvisor and then asked hotel if they would match if I booked directly. hotel agreed. BUt, the minute we (20 something daughter and mom were traveling togetehr) were met at the airport (charged for cab fare where most other hotels in KTM do not charge from KTM GH to Dawikas), I felt that we were with Mr.... more

The Shanker is delightful. After the noise, fumes, and chaos of Kathmandu, this is a real oasis. It sits in the middle of the block, so it's separated from all the surrounding street noise. The garden is large and serene, a great place to sit and de-compress. The lobby is a little crowded, but has lots of nice chairs to... more

I stayed here during christmas week and found the hotel a nice getaway... The staff and front desk were always excellent, friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean, warm and attractive. The shower has a bath and warm water. The plumbing actually works. The breakfast is good. The sheets were clean. And most importantly, it was safe and cozy. more

My husband and I stayed here in July 2005. I also stayed here in December 1998. I still love this hotel. The building is very impressive as you arrive with lovely gardens and a small pool. Many of the public areas have intricate carvings and the staff are lovely. The bar area is particularly ornate. The rooms have seen better... more

I landed at Khatmandu Airport, declared as the most dangerous International Airport on 26th of July, 2005. A local host was there to welcome us who brought us to "Shanker Hotel" formerly "Shanker Palace". With its old style architecture and complicated corridors it still looks more like an old royal palace, a haunted one. People told us, this used to... more
