Our group of 8 stayed here for 3 nights (2 nights then 1 further night after a trip to Sapa) and had no problems at all. reception staff were very friendly and helpful ( even when I knocked on the door at 5.30am after an overnight train journey from Sapa). After booking/guaranteeing the highest level of room through a US-based travel agent who assured us this was a quality hotel, we were given the classic run-around and hassle that you only expect at places that charge $5 per night.
