We thought it was a fine hotel, small and luxurious, a spectacular view of the hills and ocean, and very friendly staff. Others have commented about the location, and that it is hard to walk up and down, maybe they didn't know about the collectivos that take you where you want to go, up or down the hills, for about... more

It wouldn't have been my choice, booked by travel agent. In the end the friendly young staff triumphed and xchanged my mind. Its hilly location is easily reached by cheapm share taxi from town and the noise of the road and dogs vanishes at night. A bit dead around the area so you need to travel into town to eat... more

This is not a luxury hotel and has no pretentions to be one. It does offer a reasonably sized room, simply furnished and clean, comfortable beds, a good breakfast and a lovely view of Valparaiso Bay, if not from your room, then from the deck on the main floor (the salvage operation next door excluded). It does not have a... more

This is an excellent place to stay in Valparaiso. The staff is very friendly, most of them speak English and would go far to help you. We visited with two kids and they were willing to accommodate every need(laundry at the last minute, reservation for a restaurant). Spectacular view of the bay (except for the backyard of the neighbor, which... more

This was a last-minute find on our trip to Chile. We loved the way that Ultramar was located up in the hills, in a residential neighborhood. Once you step inside the old building, you see what a great job they've done renovating and updating. We especially loved the deck (though the neighboring buildings were run-down). The style was appealing (we... more

Had two rooms here for two nights. Hotel is located up on one of the hills, and is about a 15 minute steep and winding walk down to the old town (I guess most people will spend twice as much going up - we didn´t try). The location is good for views, yes, but not for sights, restaurants and shops.... more

I've just returned home in Chicago after a month visiting Chile, in here I had the opportunity to visit Valparaiso, an amazing city and also I found a great hotel in which I felt the essence of the city, the mix of the old constructions and the exquisite interior design. The staff was friendly and always worried of our needs.... more

I reserved a room through the hotel's website for a 2-night stay that included new year's eve. The hotel would only offer the room along with the "New Year's Package" that included a buffet dinner and champagne on new year's eve and late check-out on new year's day. Due to the unusual manner that the hotel presented the pricing and... more

After driving around the winding hills of Valparaiso in our stick shift rental car, we finally stumbled upon arrows painted on the curb pointing us to Hotel Ultramar. The quaint brick building sits perched on one of Valpo's sea-viewing hills. The little hotel is impeccably clean from top to bottom. The staff is attentive, friendly and helpful. Rooms are basic... more

I stayed at the Hotel Ultramar on Cerro Carcel, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Don't be turned off by the outside of this old Italian mansion. All of the 19 rooms are great, with a price range from US$ 35 ($ 26.000pesos) to US$ 120 ($ 89.500 pesos), with no tax for non-Chileans. The price includes a hearty breakfast (including scrambled... more
