We have stayed at El Portal several times over the last couple of years. The cafe is a must see. There are a variety of fun local characters that gather there mornings for breakfast. It would be easy to be harsh about this hotel: it's old and away from the highway, with no air-conditioning, and no in-room phones. A person who'd recently moved to Raton, but had never been to the hotel, used the words "that fleabag!!!" when I asked if he was aware of it. If I had taken his advice to avoid... more

My grandfather was born in the El Portal (then the Seaberg Hotel). The hotel has great history. Very friendly staff and locals. Definitely stepping back in time when you stay. Not a luxury hotel but comfortable. The Raton museum is worth a visit. more
