I've been here twice this summer, with and without children. It is a great place if you like your comforts and don't mind that they come wrapped in antique format. The rooms are surprisingly comfortable. The main building does get noisy; if that bothers you, ask for a room facing back in the townhouse (attached building) next door. For famiies,... more

My husband and I were just driving around Long Island and after finding a B&B in the Hamptons that was $295 a night, we drove over to Sag Harbor and saw the American Hotel. Booked a night for $175, (I guess a bargain in New York) and got a huge room with a bathroom to dream about! Great tub, lots... more

If you're hoping a stay at the American Hotel will be a nice, quiet getaway out of NYC, think again. This place is louder than my apartment in Manhattan. There was incessant door slamming (yes, slamming) and ambient noise from the restaurant/bar below; frequent pounding up & down the stairs (there are not a lot of rooms, so I assume... more

We recently spent a night at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor and thought it was an experience worth remembering. It’s an 8-bedroom hotel with a European theme (you won’t find many large hotels in the Hamptons area). The things we value most in our hotel selection is service, cleanliness, and hotel ambiance. This particular hotel exceeds expectation in all... more

The American Hotel isn't perfect, but it's been a favorite for several years and truly deserves its reputation as one of the finest dining establishments on the East End. Try the crab salad sandwiches, brandade de morue, the petite filet, the duck, ....I could go on and on, so ...I will! The desserts are fabulous, esp the creme brulee and... more

We had heard that the American Hotel was a lovely place to stay. Wrong! What a disappointment. Yes, the hotel is a historic building but the moldy smell that greets you when you enter the hotel is unpleasant. Our room also smelled moldy. The furniture was old and uncomfortable and would be refused by a charity shop (where it was... more

I booked two rooms for myself and my mother for Thanksgiving 6 months in advance as it was part of a special weekend for her. I'd confirmed the rate several times by phone with different people and though I'd asked for a fax confirmation they never sent one. Finally three weeks before Thanksgiving I receive a fax showing the reservation,... more

So, i grew up spending my summers in Sag Harbor, and I have always watched as every evening the hotel is packed with the rich and wannabe rich people eating their dinner outside. So, when I went there for my first time to eat, i was expecting some pretty good food. It was horrible. The food was nothing special, I... more

I took my mother to Sag Harbor for Mothers Day weekend. We stopped here for a cosmopolitan. We were considering staying for dinner. Instead of pointing out the location of the bar or providing any type of welcoming greeting, the hotel manager, with sarcastic glee, asked if I had just discovered the drink on Sex and the City. Listened to... more
