My husband and I are trying to plan a two week trip to SA next December. We know we want to go to Buenos Aires. But we are conflicted on where to go from there. Rio, Chile, small towns in Argentina...etc. I would welcome any recommendations/advice. Thanks!

Definitely go to Patagonia. We went to El Calafate and El Chalten for 4 nights after we were in BA for 3. We just did a 12 day tour in January, had a complete blast!

Be sure to go to Cabana Las Lilas and have the Luigi Bosca DOC Malbec- to die for! Have a blast!

It all depend what you like but it is very useful to visit Iquazu

falls both the Argentenian and Brazilian side ( You will need a visa to Brazil unless you are British) . Also visit uruguay a stone throw to Montevidio the capital by plane or by boat

to Sacramento . You can go from there to Punta Del Este

( The Riviera of South America ) a very worthwile trip .

Or you can skip Uruguay if you can resist the temptation and fly to Florianopolis Via Sao Paulo in Brazil . Rio is very beautiful like New York on the beach but I think that

the combination of Uruguay and Florianopolis is far more

interesting and much safer and cheaper than Rio.

All the Best

After Bs.Aires I would go to Peru and visit Cusco.

Try to stay at the Kuychi Rumi (www.urubamba.com) for an excellent experience. You can see many reviews on this hotel on Tripadvisor Forum

3 are so different, my opinion:

Small town in Argentina, dont be worth it for a long trip.

Rio de Janeiro: is really a beautiful city, but dangerous for american or european tourist. So hot and humid at summer (December). A good beach place.

Chile : It dependes, if you are looking for a beach place is not for you. The water is freeze and not clear. But the Patagonia or Lake District are beatiful, beatiful, beatiful, and mucho more safe than Rio.

I would suggest flying into Bariloche (kind of touristy) and drive down through the little towns to the South like El Bolson and Esquel. From Esquel you can drive to the Chile border in a matter of minutes and have lunch in Futaleufu....

Good luck!

It really depends on what you are going for. But if RELAXATION and KINDNESS are your cup of tea I would stay OUT of Rio. As mentioned in an earlier post it is a very beautiful City but very dangerous and extremely hot at that time of year!

Personally, since I am living in S. America (Chile) and have experienced December weather first hand... I would suggest you stick down to the South. Buenos Aires will be hot enough, believe me!! After there you could take a trip through the small towns of Argentina by car. then cross over through Bariloche to the Lake District on the Chile side. There are fantastic National Parks (Torres del Paine), thermal baths, and plenty of culture to fill up your time!

As a suggestion... if you can speak Spanish, book your tickets through LAN.CL or aerolineasdelsur.cl You will save a ton of money just by using the website in Spanish...who knows why...my mom and I have saved over 1000 dollars on our last two trips doing it that way. (Lan.cl might even still have its South American "hopper" pass which can save you too if you are taking multiple flights....

Buena Suerte! y NOS VEMOS!! :)

Hi,

remember Southamerica is the continent of cultural and natural diversity...

Starting from Buenos Aires (3n) try Iguazú (2n): having the oportunity of enjoying the largest waterfalls is not to be missed, after that

Argentina in two weeks is very hard, but trying other countries along with Argentina may be crazy...

If you are into natural eco toursim, Argentina is your country to visit.

They care and preserve their natural beauties more than any other country in Southamerica.

So, try south to get to the province of Chubut (7n), which has the beauties of the whales and pengouins and the cliffs, and then head inland for the Welsh immigration footsteps...

And for the next trip, you come over to Chile and the western side of the southern cone...

Best regards from Chile,

Jdelapaz

I am from Brazil and I also do not recomend Rio, especially December that is crowded. I recommend New Years' Eve in Brazil, though, because it is beautiful at the beach over there. What is your budget? I highly recommend Bahia, but depending on your budget ( luxury or economy? )there are different places to visit. Budget I will say Salvador or Porto Seguro. Luxury - a fancy resort- there are many out there. I also stayed at Praia do Forte, it is the cutest little village. If you want to visit Rio for a day or 2, you could do it and then go to Buzios, an amazing little village with gorgeous beaches, but you must go by car / bus.
