Anyone had any trouble with the parking/taxi attendant at the Cliff?

We first went for a meal at the Cliff 2 years ago. We got a taxi from Coral Mist up there and the guy taking us up said to give him a ring 20mins before we wanted to come back and he would come and pick us up. I remember that he warned us that the parking attendant used all kinds of tricks to get you to use their house taxis so to be weary.

So at the end of the meal we retired to the cocktail lounge and I called our taxi. 20mins later we walked outside and the parking attendant asked if we needed a taxi, to which I told him we had one coming. He then asked who was coming and asked for his number as he would call him for us, to which I gave him the guys number. He went into reception and 2mins later came back saying our driver had got stuck and couldn't make it to which I said something along the lines of "I don't think so" and we started to leave the compound....which is when the attendant said to us "I wouldn't do that its not safe out there" to which we continued to keep walking and our driver showed up - we told him on the way back and he said he had heard lots of similar stories.

So fast forward 2 years to a week ago - our 2nd visit to the Cliff.

Again we got a taxi up there and had the meal and called the guy to come pick us up. Upon walking out of the reception/bar area the same parking attendant approached and asked if we needed a cab - to which I just said no. That kind of threw him off his guard for a couple of seconds as he didn't know what to say. He came back with "well which way are you heading - North or South?". My fiance then told him that we had a driver coming pick us up and we would wait at the edge of the compound, to which (honest to God) he raised both hands and said "Oh Jesus" as if we were going to get mugged as soon as we stepped off the property.

Anyone had a similar experience there? This guy is probably early to mid-40's and I seem to remember that he had greyish hair swept back and possibly a moustache.

Apparently he's well known for his tricks so why the Cliff don't get shut of him as he really is putting a dampner on their reputation.

Incidentally we both agreed that our second visit there was nowhere near as special as our first and the food wasn't actually that good on this visit....we had nicer meals at both Champers and a fantastic restaurant in Rockley called Aqua.

Strange, we have never experienced this however did not meet this guy, we met the bald headed big guy that you dont argue with, immaculate manners might I add.

Now this IS odd as I remember when ever we have had a return taxi for the "Cliff they don't turn up -I'm not saying all the time but certainly last time & it has happened before, I just thought it was me.....

I find the food at the "good restuarants" much the same, it's just the atmosphere that changes.

On every occasion that we have arrived or left he has been nothing but a perfect gentleman.

In fact we have always had a really good chat with him when leaving.

He seems to know all the drivers by name and by car too !

Don't know about the 'taxi scam' - we drove ourselves and the doorman was fine - if a little OTT and a bit too chatty ( on how he remembered which car belonged to which guest)

... but it does make me wonder again and again about the 430 BDS$ that was 'accidentally' added to my CC transaction ( quickly refunded)

.... perhaps not everybody who dines at The Cliff checks their card statement as closely as I do !!??

Maybe The Cliff is now more interested in making money than fine dining ...certainly our meal was OK but definitely a uninspiring menu

Totally agree with CarlaDay about the Big guy at the Cliff. Why get your cab anywhere else?

Having said that we had a very poor experience at The Cliff last month. 45 minute wait for stiffling hot table on the third tier, work experience waiter, spilt wine on trousers and coffee on tablecloth - real Fawlty Towers stuff.

We will avoid in future, but when you see all the 5 star establishments being built on the west coast, I doubt they will be short of busuiness.

The food was excellent btw.

In reply to the post regarding the service, we ate there twice two weeks ago and on both occasions the service was dire. The food was as good as ever but we put it down to both times we had booked a bank holiday sitting.... we waited 1 1/2 hours before we were even seated and then 45 mins for our starters. The place was not busy either & it was our most expensive time we have ever eaten there too...

We have had extra charges applied to our card on two occasions once was around £80.00 extra and to be fair they have always sorted it out.

Anywhere else and i would not bother to return but as for The Cliff, I will keep going back just for the amazemnent & food factor.

There are at least 2 attendants - the main man is BIG Pancho - usually in a loud blue "hawaiian style" shirt. He is a real character and knows the local taxi guys ie the ones that work the west coast hotels. Never had this problem in loads of visits - normally asks who your driver is and whistles them down and tells you some story about the driver! Good for a bit of banter when you stagger out late at night..

May be they prefer to see local guys get the business over taxis up from south of Bridgetown - which would be "understandable" and I guess every hotel / restaurant door staff are on deals or reciprocal favours with their chums! That's life happens all over.

We have had an occasion where we've had a drivers' cousin collect us from our hotel as he said the original driver was off on a big run and could not meet our pick up time - these things can be genuine and I think within reason most drivers will have others covering each other and working as a team to protect their revenue...

Main thing is to get a lift home - they all charge the same!

Jim

I beg to differ - the Cliff "house" taxis are definitely more expensive. Plus we had already paid our driver on the way to the Cliff for the return journey so there was no way I was paying again!

Don't get me wrong the food was good at the Cliff its just our 2nd meal there was nowhere near as good as the 1st.

Maybe the 1st time we ate there 2 years ago we were a bit blown away with the service and setting etc and this time we saw the cracks like;

1) Generally uninspired menu which I could swear had some of the same dishes they had on 2 years ago

2) The music they played (seemed to be a Portishead album) was the same as 2 years ago

3) Being told that they would try and give us a rail side table even that on Tuesday 6 May at 8pm they were less than 40% full and you could have walked in off the street and asked for a railside table and got one

4) I sat for 5mins with my empty wine glass before thinking sod it and grabbing the bottle from the bucket and trying to pour my own....admittedly the waiter appeared out of nowhere when I did and grabbed the bottle off me saying "no, no, no sir"

You know the whole meal and wine/drinks was probably £175/180 so it wasn't even that expensive but I just think that perhaps next time you go - have a little closer look and I don't think the Cliff is as good as its made out to be.

Saying that we will go again but we may just leave it for the next holiday or two....

Our Taxi driver was adament he wasn`t able to wait on car park so waited for us on the otherside of the road. I think he just stayed there the whole time we had our meal which I feel bad about. The attendant asked us what his name was and he shouted him by name so no problem. I agree about service. Very slow and they lost out on more drinks orders because of this. Food excellent and setting perfection. Stunning.
