Anyone had any trouble with the parking/taxi attendant at the Cliff?

We first went for a meal at the Cliff 2 years ago. We got a taxi from Coral Mist up there and the guy taking us up said to give him a ring 20mins before we wanted to come back and he would come and pick us up. I remember that he warned us that the parking attendant used all kinds of tricks to get you to use their house taxis so to be weary.

So at the end of the meal we retired to the cocktail lounge and I called our taxi. 20mins later we walked outside and the parking attendant asked if we needed a taxi, to which I told him we had one coming. He then asked who was coming and asked for his number as he would call him for us, to which I gave him the guys number. He went into reception and 2mins later came back saying our driver had got stuck and couldn't make it to which I said something along the lines of "I don't think so" and we started to leave the compound....which is when the attendant said to us "I wouldn't do that its not safe out there" to which we continued to keep walking and our driver showed up - we told him on the way back and he said he had heard lots of similar stories.

So fast forward 2 years to a week ago - our 2nd visit to the Cliff.

Again we got a taxi up there and had the meal and called the guy to come pick us up. Upon walking out of the reception/bar area the same parking attendant approached and asked if we needed a cab - to which I just said no. That kind of threw him off his guard for a couple of seconds as he didn't know what to say. He came back with "well which way are you heading - North or South?". My fiance then told him that we had a driver coming pick us up and we would wait at the edge of the compound, to which (honest to God) he raised both hands and said "Oh Jesus" as if we were going to get mugged as soon as we stepped off the property.

Anyone had a similar experience there? This guy is probably early to mid-40's and I seem to remember that he had greyish hair swept back and possibly a moustache.

Apparently he's well known for his tricks so why the Cliff don't get shut of him as he really is putting a dampner on their reputation.

Incidentally we both agreed that our second visit there was nowhere near as special as our first and the food wasn't actually that good on this visit....we had nicer meals at both Champers and a fantastic restaurant in Rockley called Aqua.

Since when did Michael Winner's opinion count ?

I'm sure the Cliff will remain the 'top spot' in Barbados for many years to come.

Well if the Cliff is a "dump" there ain't much hope for the rest! If one simply went out to "get something to eat" the setting & atmosphere would count for nothing, I have had better food & service than the Cliff (not often) but never a better setting & that is what it's all about -you get it or you don't - the whole West coast thing is bit like that, you either appreciate it or not.

I don't agree that its a dump but I do believe they have got complacent and I think there are at least 2-3 better restaurants on the island now.

And lets not start having a pop at Michael Winner - I'm sure he's been to more and far nicer restaurants than any of the posters on here! I'm sure he can tell the excellent ones from the mediocre!

I love the ambience of The Cliff, and had excellent service each time we've visited (which is only twice so far). Unfortunately the food lets them down! They haven't made the worlds top 50 restaurants since 2005. If you like good food, look out for L'Enclume in Cartmel, South Cumbria. I predict it may sneak into the top 50 next year.

I know it well jb and it is indeed excellent but it does not have the ambience of the Cliff - again only my opinion.

Wrong again then (me that is) I was under the impression the "Cliff" was in the top ten restaurants..... depends which guide & I could get to the Cliff easier than Cumbria! Still haven't been anywhere to beat the setting, though our local pub was pretty good tonite ('roast carvery' by the river Itchen)

Just thought I'd give everyone an update - after emailing the Cliff I got quite a prompt and curteous phonecall from Mr Brian Ward (the manager) who assured me that I am not the first person to highlight this to them and that he has now had 2 meetings with the employee in question.

He has also offered me a free meal for 2 next time we visit which I intend to take him up on.

Just a shame 3 days before his call we have booked our honeymoon to St Lucia/Antigua - damn it!!!
