I have never been to Punta Cana before, but just booked a week at the Grand Oasis for the end of August. I have been reading the reviews and they are scaring the hell out of me....especially with repeated reviews stating that people were getting sick from the food. Has anyone been there recently ? Does anyone have anything good to say about the place ?

Thanks,

GG

i would not wory about the food,

the all inclusive food at punta cana resorts is really a great value for the view bucks paid for it. people often forget that they did not book a top 5 star resort where they dine at a gourmet restaurant with an international Chef taking care of everything, of course for 100.- + per person per dinner, we are talking about all in clusive vacations.

in case of the Grand Oasis i would actually not recommend the resort for its ongoing constructions.

they raise a new block on their south for around 80 new rooms, on their north you face the "Ugly site" of the Sunscape Punta Cana, a complete construction site, because that so praised "Sunsational" Sunscape Punta Cana been not even worth renovations, they take the buildings down and build something new, so no nice view towards the north neither. in the middle of all they are still in the middle of renovating their existing old rooms at the Oasis.

all sheduled to take place til the end of the year 2008. it will be a top spot with brand new rooms x-mas ahead, prior to the day when they fiinish to be done i would not even take a 'good deal' to stay there, i am sure they will get 'kicked' by bad reviews during the next months.

happy travel

Thanks for the response Mike. I must confess it is not what I wanted to hear given that I have already booked the trip. The travel agent didn't say anything about the construction. I guess it won't be that much of a bummer, given that I like to hang on the beach and be close to the water all day anyway....guess I will just have to drink more before I go to bed to avoid hearing anything.....lol

I am happy to hear that I shouldn't be worrying about the food !

hi GG,

the beach site is no problem, it is a beautiful area.

like mentioned in prior posts, i live myself a few hundred yards aside on the same beach strip.

a great area with very calm waters.

my construction info is coming 1st bhand from a buddy of mine who works as a touroperator's representative at the resorts down here including at the Grand Oasis.

have a blast

GG,

I'm going there on the 23rd.

I asked 3 tour operators and there is NO CONSTRUCTION going on right now. I have no clue where the other guy heard that but you shouldn't listen to believe everything you hear/read.

The Cameleon Suits are new, they were added to the hotel in 2007 plus the whole hotel was renovated that same year. The cameleon suits are reserved for nolitours custumers apparently.

Beach is very nice I heard but the waves brings seaweed everyday and it's pretty nasty but who cares...they are harmless. The sand is white and water clear blue. That's all that matters to me.

As for the food my friend, you have to be careful, people tend to over eat and that's why they get sick. People who are not used to eating tropical fruits, different food such as spices, oily food, fried food should stay away from it. If you're not used to eating something, don't eat it.

Too much papaya and coconut juice will make you sick. Trust me on that one :)

Aside from that, I'm hoping for sunny days everyday!

When are you going exactly? Got a good deal?

Have a blast!

K.

paradis.. I think that i would take mike fishers word over a tour company any day. I trust him as he is a friend..but also he only lives a little down the beach from these resorts that he is talking about so he would SEE the construction.

As he also runs a fishing charter company, he deals with people at the resorts constantly

Cheers

Lynn,

I buy my tickets from the same tour operator for the past 4 years and she herself has been there in April 2008. She says it was beautiful with no construction whatsoever. She only saw 2 guys on the roof cleaning whatever garbage there was previous rainy days.

To make sure that what she was saying is true, I contacted 3 other tour operator that I also trust.

I guess I'll see for myself and I'll learn to keep an open mind.

Paradise..,

i can see the constructions from my own beach where i live very close by. no need to enter the resort to "see"/know that. my description of the inside renos/constructions are like i wrote above from a friend of mine who is a touroperators representative, he has always clients at that resort(aside several other resorts of course), so he has clients who wanna change to an other resort several times a week, the only ccomplains he has to work on since a while are the ones of the customers at this resort complaining about "vaca on the construction site".

that's fact

nothing bad talked, just facts described.

stick with your 3 touroperators(wow, you have great connections to contact 3 at a time and get fast responses from each about a specific resort and it's constructions, i know that 99% of the selling travel agents don't even know about ongoing constructions of a resort they sell to you, most evenn never been here with or without construction, they read brochures and pass that info to you) and let the ONE touroperator where you book your Vaca sign a valid paper which says that you get moved/upgraded/refunded in case your room faces a construction or in case the view from the pool faces construction workers walking by.

happy travel

My husband, me and another couple were at the Grand Oasis in March. I didn't see any construction going on. The beach is beautiful, the food is pretty good and the drinks are awesome, especially the Coco Loco. We did have a problem with out first room, but they moved us to another room the next day. The service was also very good. Angel in the buffet was very friendly and he spoke pretty good English. He taught us some Spanish and we taught him some more English. It was fun. You will have a great time.
