MEX airport lounge |
|
BA shares a lounge in Mexico in Terminal 1 on the 2nd floor (when you exit security and see the duty free shops in front of you go right, down a flight of stairs and then take the elevator up.) If I am not mistaken, they share with American, which is usually too crowded and still has a smoking section oddly enough and limits drinks Regardless, it is not at all memorable (and I was there less than a month ago in the lounch) and it is nothing special. Only Mexicana really has a unique lounge in Mexico City with any style but Aeromexico's new Terminal 2 lounge tries hard. As the time for the European departures approach, the lounges all get too crowded because it seems like Air France, Lufthansa, KLM, British Airways and Iberia all have flights departing from Terminal 1 within the same hour (equal headache of long lines at Immigration when you arrive as all seem to get here at the same time.) Checking out at noon and heading to the airport for the BA flight which won't leave until around 9 pm is way too much time. BA won't have its check in area open and thus you won't be able to get past security with your luggage and no boarding pass to the lounge. You can leave your bags with your bell captain and visit a museum. I recall you are at Embassy Suites. Check out at noon, head to the Anthropology Museum or Modern Art Museum (on Sunday, I saw the Mexico 1968 Olympics exhibit and it is fun and interesting - plus there is Remedios Varos there too)and stay till 5 pm, then go to hotel, get bags and take a taxi to the airport and you will still have a couple of hours in the lounge. Alternatively, check out at noon, kill a couple of hours, have a big Mexican style lunch from 2 pm to 4 pm and then head back to hotel to get bags and a taxi to the airport. Then turn your airplane chair into a bed, put the divider up from your neighbor and sleep all the way to the U.K. I have to say that BA remain my favourite seats in Business Class, even better than Virgn Atlantic.

Thanks Happyontheroad. We are really looking forward to the trip. we would never normally travel by Business Class , but we had quite a few airmiles and have decided to treat ourselves before our first baby arrives at the end of the year. Will definitely take your advice on visiting amuseum. we would most likely have done the anhtro museum before then, so will try your other suggestion. Is the duty free shopping any good? Thanks for all your help.

Duty free shopping at Mexico City is nothing out of the ordinary. However, due to UK and USA limits on liquids, buy your tequila at duty free to take home as it is given to you as you board the aircraft. If you buy it in Mexico City (where believe it or not Sams Club or Costco is cheaper than duty free for the same brand), you cannot carry it on and have to check it. Thus, Duty Free is always good for tequila needs. (No tequila for you until after the baby is born.)

The wide variety of Duty Free options in Mexico City is something I've not seen many other places I travel to - it's extensive/impressive. Like duty free shops just about anywhere - don't expect to find any bargains. Check with your hotel to see if it will accommodate your late-departure somewhat, maybe an extended check-out period. The last place I'd want to visit on my last day is the exhausting Anthropology Museum; find something more relaxed to do.

babygirl, I absolutely LOVED the Mexicana Airlines club at MEX. I paid a well-worth-it 350 Pesos for a day pass. Free soft drinks (not sure about whether the alcohol was free), shower, snacks, lots of Internet computers, spacious lounging areas, tv's, nice 4th-floor views of the tarmac and a GREAT exercise area with free weights and varous exercise machines.

If you have a platinum Amex card there is a "Centurion Club" lounge airside that has internet, free alcohol, comfy chairs and a view of the runways. There is also an Amex lounge landside which you can access if you have a gold card (or higher) with free soft drinks (but not free alcohol). The latter tends to get a bit busy though.

It's good to hear about the Mexicana lounge, since Mexicana will be joining the oneworld alliance next year. Hopefully that'll mean those of us who fly BA will be able to use that lounge in preference to the dreadful lounge operated by AAnother airline
