Is it acceptable for a woman to go to a bar by herself after dinner to listen to some live music, or would I be asking for trouble?

I'll be staying in the Condesa area.

Thanks!

It is not the best idea. If you were going to do it anyway, the only neighborhood I would suggest is Condesa which is more urbane/sophisticated and the bar probably is less likely to be full of fresas and wannabes who do not know how to handle their alcohol.

It's completely acceptable. You might get guy after guy trying to pick up a conversation, but I'm sure you've been there before. You could try sitting next to a group of girls to divert the attention and appear like you might be with them.

You shouldn't get into trouble.

Thank you both for your answers.

Ignore the troll.

Whether it's acceptable or not depends upon you, your appearance, the type of establishment you'd be going into, the time of day, the zone of the city, etc., etc. There's no one set, pat answer to your question.

The Zona Rosa is the city's principal zone for live entertainment and it would be appropriate for you to enter most of the establishments there alone. The same probably holds true for places in la Condesa or Colonia Roma. You may find it difficult to locate much live music in Condesa, however.

BikeTraveller:

Are you staying at the RTH in Condesa? If so, Jorge will be able to advise you which bars to visit. There are lots of nice cafe/bars in that area anyway. Many of them look out onto the street so it's easy to see what the clientele is like. I doubt if many have live music. There is a salsa place somewhere on Insurgentes.

The ZR is mainly famous for its gay bars!

Yes, I'll be staying at RTH, and I read wonderful things about Jorge, so I'm counting on him to help me out too.

Too bad about Condesa not having live music, I was really looking forward to it.

yes - Jorge is great! he'll give you all the spots. you may also meet other guests to hang out with.

When I'm traveling alone and hesitant to go out at night, I just remember that none of these people will ever see me again! You dont see many women alone at night in Mexico and Central America so the looks you get will be because its unusual.

Evening,

It was actually after reading your report that I contacted Jorge, so thank you!

I grew up in Brazil, so I'm used to the latin male way of thinking (hence the laughing on my previous post), I just want to make sure I'm not breaking major local rules when I go somewhere.

I appreciate everyone's help and input!
