Fourth Leg - St. Peter's -Pictou-Canning |
|
Leaving St. Peters we’ll drive through Antigonish & up 337 to Cape George, Ballantyne’s Cove, Malignant Cove (love the names) then 245 to Arisaig Park, the Culloden Memorial at Knoydart & on to Pictou by mid-late afternoon in time to tour the Hector.
Next will be an interesting day: coming from Pictou ending in Canning. I want to drive from Pictou to Truro & then around the Minas Basin. Should we do the 102 from Truro to Stewiacke (not into tidal bore rafting) or cut over on 289 to S. Maitland? Then all along the shore stopping at Burncoat Head, through Windsor, Wolfville & on to Canning. Maybe Grand Pre Winery or Blomidon Inn for dinner? Between the Bushes for lunch or dinner?
Next day walks/hikes at Cape Blomidon and/or Cape Split & then dinner at Hall’s Harbor Lobster Pound.
Notice the recurring themes of all our days - coastlines & food!

It really depends on how leisurely you want your morning in Pictou to be. I's going to take you about an hour from Pictou to Truro. It's a nice drive through East Hants Co. if you want to take 289 - 236 to see the countryside or up along 215 which runs along the coast. I would budget about 3 hours to do that loop out to Windsor where you can pick up Hwy. 101 to get out to the Wolfville-New Minas-Canning area. Incidentally, there is a restaurant in Windsor, Cocoa Pesto, that I'm planning to visit myself next week because I keep hearing so much good press about it. If you exit Hwy. 101 at exit 10, you will drive through Grand Pre to Wolfville then eventually on to Greenwich, New Minas and Kentville. Grand Pre and the historic site there are very historic and interesting. Wolfville is a wonderful town to poke around in, and is home to some very nice restaurants like Acton's and Tempest. Personally, I think Blomidon Inn is best for brunch rather than dinner but it's not like you will have a bad meal. I remember going to Hall's Harbour before there was a restaurant there, so it strikes me as kind of tourist trappy now but again, you won't have a bad meal there. Enjoy your stay in NS!

Good to know the times, thanks Mooma. We'll leave Pictou around 9 & plan to be in Canning 6ish - that'll leave plenty of time for the Minas shoreline on 215. I'd heard about Tempest & looked at their menu. They got a review today, sort of a qualified good. Re: Hall's Harbor, well, I am a tourist so I'll fit right in! It was more the idea of the place, right on the water, outside dining (I hope) etc. Looking forward to hearing about your dinner at Cocoa Pesto (also on my list. I think we may have to eat 4 or 5 meals a day to fit in all the restaurants....) Deb
