Our flight from New York 10/11 doesn't arrive until close to midnight Saturday night, and all the rental car desks are closed. The plan is to take a cab into downtown Halifax, spend the night, then rent the car Sunday mid morning. But...will we have a hard time finding a cab? Any pubs stay open late beside the Atlantic Casino (4am)? We'll be coming from California, four hour time difference, and probably will be wide awake for a while.

Many thanks for advice.

As long as there are flights coming in there should be cabs. There should also be the shuttle bus which is less expensive. Our liquor laws regulate closing hours. The Casino may be your best bet.

You shouldn't have any trouble finding a cab. A lot of the downtown pubs (eg. Pogue Fado, Old Triangle) close at 2 a.m. and there are several dance bars (eg. The Dome, The New Palace) that are open until 3:30 a.m., just realize that most of the people in them will have been drinking for several hours by the time you get there. The crowd at the Casino tends to be older and less rowdy.

... and make sure you bring id, cause some bars ID everybody no matter what.

You can stay out partying until 3:30-4am, and then there's always pizza corner!

Tons of cabs, you won't have a problem.

Wow! Thanks for the suggestions! Looks like the last Airporter Shuttle leaves at 2330, so we'll be grateful for the cabs. I'll rethink the hotel--will try walking distance to a dance club, instead of the casino. Is pizza corner downtown? Don't want to sound obsessed by the alcohol thing, but do they serve beer? We will carry ID, though "carding" me and my buddy would be pretty silly.

Thanks again for the advice.

Hi gracecm "

Yes Pizza Corner is right in the heart of downtown.

The downtown area is easily walkable so you can get around on foot from your hotel to all the bars and clubs once you get to the city from the airport

Saturday night will be packed as we have several universities right in Halifax so prepare for a lively experience,

Have fun,

blondie **

You should really go for a donair at Pizza Corner (google "donair" so you know what you are getting yourself into--they are delicious, though). Pizza Corner is located near the Blowers St./Argyle St. intersection, it's just a bunch of pizza places in the same area that are open after the bars close. They don't serve alcohol although the bars are nearby.

IMO, the quintessential Halifax bar is the Lower Deck but I think they close at 1:30. If you can make it there for the last set, it might be a good way to kick off your evening and your night on the town.

I have the impression you are not of a tender age.

If you are going to have a late night donair,I would ensure a supply of antacid is handy.

I love them but they don't reciprocate the affection.

Aah, donairs. A difficult subject. Most likely I’ve never had a “proper” one. I’ll have to buy one for my buddy and watch her face as she struggles to eat--I mean, as she wolfs it down. I convinced her to accompany me on this trip with descriptions of the splendors of Nova Scotia—the scenery, the Keiths, the seafood, oatcakes, and the charming inhabitants; but probably should also introduce her to the darker side, like the donairs, Tim Hortons, and bagpiping.

I haven’t selected a hotel yet. I don’t do so well with decision making. This is to be our overnight splurge before our week-long, leafy rubbernecking on Cape Breton Island. Fortunately, the longer I procrastinate, the easier the selection should be. I was kinda, sorta, maybe thinking about the Lord Nelson, because of the eye-popping lobby, and because it would be hilarious to tell folks in my best snooty voice “Well, yes, I ALWAYS stay at the Lord Nelson,” but then again, although we will pack our sportiest geriatric knee pads, it might be a little far for the crawl home. By Friday, the available choices should be narrowed down nicely, and if everything is full, that will only add to the excitement.

Thanks again for all the advice. Looking forward to an autumn week in NS.
