I've been a "lurker" on the Australian forums for a while and have read many threads with great interest. I finally plucked up the courage to create an account but was instantly gutted when my partner told me how my name could be misinterpreted! Eek! :'(

Anyhow, I waffle...my question is what should my partner and I do for for New Years Eve in Sydney?!

We have a hotel booked, a car booked to travel up the East coast, and have even booked a hotel room in Port Macquarie! However, we have not yet decided on what to do for NYE!

We have been to Australia before, we backpacked for a year in 2002. We loved it so much that we thought that we would treat ourselves to a holiday...ah, I digress again!

Preferably, we would very much like to spend the night at the Harbour either at a look-out point or on a cruise. Am I correct in thinking that we won't be able to get anything for around the $350pp mark?

We've given up on the thought of a Harbour restaurant!

So, any recommendations or a prod in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance!

dear love buzz

welcome to TA!

Sydney on new years eve goes off.

Most peaple gather around the opera house area to watch the fire works which are the best in australia, its a real party atmosphere. Weve done it once and loved it.

If you havent already booked a restraunt in the rocks area you are going to struggle.

I will leave the finner details to any Sydney posters to give more info.

cheers

I've been looking into NYE options extensively! There are still a fair few companies out there with availability, the cheapest i've found is $390 per person but they don't participate in the Harbour of Lights part of the NYE celebrations, but assure me that i will get a great view of the fireworks! Other options that seem good for overseas visitors such as ourselves are:

Midnight at the Oasis - Botanic Gardens, tickets went on sale last week, i believe they are around $225? Someone correct me if i'm wrong!

Or

Opera bar NYE party - 70s disco theme, the bar is right on the harbour front so should deffo offer great views of the fireworks. Tickets aren't on sale yet, but will cost $295 per person. This is the option that i'm almost 90% going to go for....... i think!

Thank you for your replies, much appreciated. :)

I think that I will have another search on cruises when I get home from work...

I still don't know what to do....I think that I frazzled my brain from trying to find accommodation in Byron!!!

A picnic at a lookout point sounds nice. However, can you take your own alcohol and is it so crowded that we will get trampled or an elbow to the eye?! ^_^

Hmm, I've also read about something called "Lunch on the lawn" or something like that. Is this recommended?

Are you referring to the 'Pinic on the Lawn'? If so, that's at the Botanic Gardens as well. They provide a pinic for you, but you can't bring your own drinks, you have to buy it there!

Ah, that's the one! Some sites are telling me that it is sold out though...

So...if I was to make my own picnic and sit on a random bit of grass, would I be able to take my own beverages then?!

Oh Diva, whilst going through some other threads, I found this post in regards to the Opera Bar which you may be interested in:

A note on the Opera bar. It will have great views of the harbour bridge for the fireworks but usually they have fireworks coming off the buildings in the city as well. Being right beneath the opera house might obscure your view. Also I guess they limit the numbers for NYE but on a regular Friday night you can't move in that place let a lone get anywhere near to where you can see the bridge...

Random question: Is there a lot of street entertainment around the harbour too?

Ukdiva, could I ask you which cruises you have looked into and what ones have been recommended to you?

The 'Pinic on the Lawn' is a ticketed event, so you wouldn't just be able to turn up with your own stuff unfortunately! *lol* There are various vantage points around the harbour that you can do that with though. If you go to - http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/nye/ there's a link there to the various spots.

The event at the Opera bar is limited tickets only so hopefully they won't sell so many that it gets ridiculously packed. I'm still kinda wavering back and forth between this and a cruise though, but plan to make a decision by the end of this month... hopefully! *lol*

I'll send you a PM with the name of the cruise company i've been looking at.

Awesome, thank you diva. :)

From my post earlier, I meant are we allowed to take alcohol to the public view-points or it this a big no-no? =D

Some vantage points allow alcohol, if you go to the website i gave, and click on 'vantage points' theres a list of almost every available spot in and around sydney with all their restrictions.. it's very in depth!

I've PM'd you btw :)
