We're planning a trip to Australia and New Zealand and are wondering if August/September is a good time to go. We're trying to avoid the crowds and go when the weather is good (warm enough for swimming). We'll be traveling on the West coast of Australia and in the South island of New Zealand.

Any suggestions? Will August/September work?

Are you going to the West Coast of Australia as well as Sydney & the reef or did you mean travelling the East coast of Australia?

August/Sept is a great time to travel up to Queensland and it is usually great weather for swimming. Still cooler around Sydney although fining up as wspring begins probably not warm enough to swim around Sydney.

One thing to be aware of though is that it is school holidays for the various eastern states from 20 September until 5 October and lots of people from NSW & Victoria travel to Queensland in those holidays seeking some sun after a long winter.

August is the coldest month in the SI of NZ. September is rather milder, with spring in Chch a beautiful sight.
