Hi there, Can someone please help me with the driving times between the following places? Basically I will be visiting for the first time on a business trip so would like to know what to expect regarding driving to see if I can plan to also fit in maybe a little sightseeing. So far all I know is that I will be visiting the following places and will spend 1 night in each: Fly into Burnie Dive to Devonport Drive to Launceston Driver to Hobart then fly back to Melbourne. Thanks in advance. |

what you need is google maps www.google.com.au/maps use the get directions tab and away you go. It's brilliant.

Thanks Snodge. Google tells me: Burnie to Devonport 1 hour Devonport to Launceston 1.5 hours Launceston to Hobart 2 hours Can anyone confirm that these times are correct as I have been mislead with whereis.com.au before. Does anyone have any suggestions for: any must see stops when driving this route lunch or dinner places they would recommend Hotel priced about $150 per night (1 person per room) Thanks

Its always great to get real life experience from people. but don't worry about the whereis comparison. Whereis is hopeless. I've been running a comparison between googlemaps and the NRMA trip planner (which I have always found very reliable) and google maps has very similar outcomes, just different functionality.

Snodge, Whereis usually get's me lost! I keep telling hubby I need GPS but sometimes they can also be unreliable. Thankfully I won't be driving this trip as I have never been to Tas before, my collegue has but I would like to make sure that we stop at few places unbeknown to him! I'll work it in the schedule somehow:-) Actually I was hoping to wait until warmer weather but I have decided it's best to jump in while someone else is driving as it not my favorite thing on strange roads and even though from Melb it's cold in Tassie at this time of year. I'm usually pretty good with my holiday but as this is a business trip and it has snuck up on me!

Yeah, you always need to be a little sceptical with the computer generated routes. My brother in laws GPS gets him to the destinations and he loves it, but it doesn't seem to take account of the aterial road system. Sounds like you are going to have a fun time! When you're fooling around on google maps you can roll the dial thing on your mouse and zoom in as far as you like for additional detail. If you have a map of tasmania as a sanity check that will help put your mind at rest. You can also click on the blue line and drag it to the road you want to travel on if you don't actually want to go the fastest route. This I find an extremely handy functionality. Or you can right click on a spot on the map and tell it to give you directions to or from there. It's a great program and it keeps getting better. They just release new functionality a few days ago so you have another way to add destinations or swap your to and from... I better go rest now... I think I'm starting to babble.. man I LOVE google maps for trip planning! Oh, PS I've been planning a big US trip using googlemaps and so far it has been consistent with the times people with experience of the routes and location are telling people. The thing to watch is that the maps don't allow for tourist stopping along scenic routs for taking a snap or whatever so watch that aspect of it. Stopping regularly can take up quite a bit of time.

Those drive times are approximate so to be safe you should always count on taking a little longer. IME Lonny to Hbt takes just over 3 hours...esp. if you get stuck in a long 'convoy' and there is no opportunity to pass. My other point would be...why Burnie? Why Devonport? There are *so* many other glorious places in Tasmania - Cradle Mountain anyone? - that I'd rather be than those 2 (no offence!). I am sure you have reasons of course...just thought I'd mention it ;-)
|
hmm google tells me Launceston to Hobart is 2 hrs 47 mins... maybe you overlooked the additional minutes wawa
|
Unfortunately it's a work trip and that is where the customers are located. I have never been to Tasmania so can't complain but was hoping to go a little later in the year - when it's a bit warmer. Also means if I ever get there for a holiday I won't have the urge to check them out just in case! Snodge, At least 2.45 was little closer than my original 2 hour posting. Sounds like you addicted to Google Maps:-) Actually I'm a little surprised at how close everything is as my colleague has told me in the past that this trip means a lot of driving .... it doesn't seem like a lot at all considering we have 4 days.
|
LOL yeah wawa definitely I'm addicted to google maps!! Just give me any excuse LOL
