Looking for recommendations on tour bus verses driving from Adelaide to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road. Does anyone have any tour recommendations? Is it a difficult drive? Have about three days set aside for the trip. Thanks.

Groovy Grape is a company which runs tour busses mainly aimed at backpackers which travel between Adelaide and Melbourne.

Not sure if that's your crowd but if you fancy that it's not a bad operation. Worth a look.

Driving would be a great option if you are comfortable driving on the other side of the road. It is not a difficult drive but it is very slow in parts due to winding road etc. This allows you to stop at the areas of interest to you and not be pressured to move on if you find a nice spot where you want to spend more time. It would be possible to do it in 3 days but there is a lot to see, 4 would allow a bit more time at some of the spots. I live at the start of the GRO on the Adelaide side so if you want anymore information don't hesitate to ask and I will try and help.

Melbourne from Adelaide via the GOR is a straightforward run. The road only starts winding from Apollo Bay. I would suggest you make your overnights at Robe in South Aust. and Apollo Bay in Victoria. Driving is preferable to tour bus as you can stop and look for koalas (Kennett River) and Kangaroos ( Anglesea Golf Course) at your liesure if you haven't seen them before. The Otway Fly is also worth a look and the 12 Apostles are after Pt. Campbell. Also checkout Bay of Islands near Peterborough if you have the time. www.visitvictoria.com and www.greatoceanroad.org are your websites.

I should add that the GOR section is extremely well sign posted and marked with constant reminders as to which side of the road you should be driving on. Something I have never experienced in 10,000ks. of driving in Europe.

You are right LB, you won't find that here. Superior attitude?

I agree with LB about the route, actually we stayed Robe (lovely little town) and not in Apollo Bay but in Port Campbell. Take all day between PC/Apollo Bay and Lorne and enjoy. Last day to Melbourne. That gives you 4 days/3 nights but you easily can add another day. You might get to Melbourne day 3 if you are in a hurry. Also consider to visit Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide first for an extra day.

I also agree with others, we stopped off at Apollo Bay/ Port Campbell and Robe. All lovely spots.

I guess it comes down to whether you feel comfortable driving on the wrong side of the road and how confident you are in doing so.....

I let my hubby do the driving in Europe as I would be absolutely dreadful....a hazard to others...

If you feel comfortable then go for the self-drive.

If not there are some excellent tours available which operate from Adelaide to Melbourne and you can sit back and enjoy the scenery/

Having recently completed this journey - We found our top spots to stay at were Port Campbell, Warrnambool, Mount Gambier.

Theres just sooo much to see and do in the area around PC and W to rush this area. I would prefer to skip through the section between Mount Gambier and Adelaide which I didn't find quite as interesting.

Might have made a difference if the lobsters were in season I guess. May have endeared Robe and Kingston SE to me some more!! lol

Victor Harbour just outside Adelaide is well worth a visit and is just as interesting as any of the towns along the GOR.

We had one some years ago Beach8um, a lobster I mean. Fresh from Robe's marina and 1.5 kilo! You must come back some time and we hope to stay last days of our vacation in Victor Harbor again next year.

You can see Windy City girl, we all love this drive and visits. Are you still with us???

Wow - thanks for all the great info. I'm not sure how comfortable I am driving on the other side of the road, but my friend might be up for the adventure. I'll also check out the tours as well. Thanks again everyone for your great suggestions!

If we can drive in europe and USA/Canada - you can do the drive here. Especially if you from a large city, as most of your driving along GOR there are no traffic lights or cross roads! Just the ocean one side and 'T' intersections the other. Take confidence - you can do it. or maybe you just want to be the passenger and catch all the sights, which the driver really cannot do without stopping.(lol)
