We're going to be in the Sandusky area in mid-July for a family reunion. We'll be going to Cedar point for sure but was wondering what other must see attractions are in the area. We'll be staying on Lake Erie. I've heard Ohio is also home to several Amish communities and that might be something we'd like to see. How far are they from the Sandusky area? 2-3 hours? We'll have a car as we're driving in from Massachusetts.

Amish country is mostly in Holmes County and some in Wayne County. Holmes County is about a 2-hour drive from Sandusky. Lots more info is at www.visitamishcountry.com

A note on the Amish: Please be discreet if you plan to take photos. For many adult Amish, it's against their religious beliefs to have their photos taken. However, usually it's OK to take photos of the children, as they aren't members of the church yet. And in Holmes County, they're plenty used to it. (I used to live in Wayne County.)

Also cool to see near Sandusky are the islands out in Lake Erie (Put-in-Bay and Kelley's Island). There are ferries going out to them every day from Port Clinton and Marblehead. There's lots of nice shops, restaurants, entertainment, neat touristy things and even caves to explore. Also more info on those online if you just Google the island names.

Have fun at Cedar Point! We usually go out there every year (we're in Wisconsin now), but can't this year due to too many other things fighting for our money. But take an extra ride on the Millennium Force for me! :)

Thanks so much for the info and link. I'll definitely check this out. My husband is into photography but is more interested in scenery and landscapes than pictures of people and we thought there'd be good opportunities there with all the farm land, barns, horses etc...We're aware of the Amish lifestyle and wouldn't want to offend them.

I know the family has done Put in Bay before but I've never been. It should be a fun trip! nkiar

if he's into scenery and landscapes, then you must go to the Carlisle Inn or the Der Dutchman restaurant next door, in Walnut Creek. the view out of the back of these 2 buildings is amazing.
