I am going to Khartoum in December. I am travelling as the American mother of young Sudanese refuge who is from South Sudan. His father is a Minister in the Khartoumn government. Although I will not be staying with them at their home because I am married and my husband will not be accompany me. Can you suggest a good safe hotel. Any other words of wisdom would also be appreciated. I have been to several African countries, but this is the first time in Sudan.

Hi,

Can you give a overview of the situationen i Khartoum - I am on my way to Khartoum (business first time) but when you read the travel advice from the UK Embassy in Sudan it´s seems that its very dangerous in Khartoum. What do you say? Where should you stay?

" There is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks in Khartoum. Western interests, including British official interests, may be targeted. We advise against all but essential travel to Khartoum. As a precaution there will be a temporary suspension of public services at the British Embassy in Khartoum on 19 and 20 August. There is a high threat from terrorism in Sudan. Attacks could happen anywhere in Sudan, they may be against Western targets or in places frequented by foreigners."

as a person who travels annualy to sudan i can assure you that the situation in khartoum is very safe.

sudan has some unstable regions such as the south and darfur however apart from having to keep aware of pick pockets in major markets there asre no problems, khartoum has very low levels of violent crime and police are every where.

sudan in general is safe to travel in if you exclude some areas in darfur and southern sudan.

we are an american group of 8 travelers going to sudan on 8 jan until 31 jan with an outfitter called lost frontiers.

this trip may never get off the ground as we are still unable to get our visa. we have been trying to obtain the visa's now for over a month and if they are not issued tomorrow then we will not be able to go.

we understand this problem may be because we are american and if we were from any other country, this would not be a problem.

any advise?

Best regards,

Hi there,

My finance and I are considering going on a liveaboard from Port Sudan in June for our honeymoon but the travel advice from the Uk Foreign Office has made us concerned.

We were considering flying into Sudan from Egypt. What are your views on the safety of foreign visitors in Sudan?

Thanks
