Hi we are looking at self catering during our holiday on Norfolk in March 08. Wondering if there is anyone that has already visited could give us an idea of the cost of groceries on the island.

We will of course go out for the occasional meal, but having been to Lord Howe, we found groceries and like to be very expensive in Lord Howe.

Would appreciate your replies.

Thanks

I was there in July 07, and yes grocery prices were high. Especially fresh products like milk was $6.00 for 1 litre! (we bought long life!) They do bake their own bread now, which is just over a $1.00 a loaf and it's very nice.

The supermarket has a good selection of items, but as the boat comes every 6 weeks they can run out of a few things towards the end. But we didn't notice it, and the boat came in while we were there.

Fresh fruit and veges were cheaper from road side stalls. A lot of people have a table at their gate with a honesty box and sell their own produce.

The butchery opposite the airport was a bit cheaper than the supermarket.

The bowling club has good value, cheap meals too, if you do go out for dinner one night.

We're off to Norfolk for our 5th visit on 24 Feb.

Yes, groceries are expensive there which is understandable. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be scarce as nothing is imported at all. As the other poster says stalls are worth looking at.

There's usually one on the main street (outside the Scotch shop I think) but along from the Westpac bank which has good tomatoes and cucumbers at a reasonable price (honesty box). There's also a Sunday morning market next to the Information Centre where many people sell their surplus produce.

For eating out at a reasonable price you can't beat the Seaworld Reef and Beef Restaurant. Has a cheap fish night on Sunday and a cheap steak and fish night on Wednesday. Wonderful value.

Goods can run out and sometimes do if the scheduled ships cannot unload due to bad weather. We've seen this happen several times.

Please ask if you have any other queries. Hope you'll enjoy Norfolk as much as we do.
