“A Hit! A Palpable Hit!”

The Plaine

Apr 3, 2008

My husband and I stayed with Stephanie and Giles for two nights recently on a short trip to Bath. Loved the village, the George Pub and The Plaine--it was like taking a trip back in time to visit Shakespeare! The Plaine is very old and charming, and Stephanie and Giles have updated it nicely, making it very comfortable and attractive without spoiling the character. The decor is simple and classic, not fussy or overdone. The beds are indeed very comfortable, the bathrooms clean and modern, and breakfast is served in a charming big dining room with a huge hearth. The hosts could not have been nicer or more helpful, offering us good advice as well as interesting stories about the inn's past. After a day of hustle-bustle in Bath, we were happy to return to the quiet little village away from the tourists. We look forward to another visit, soon I hope.

“Plaine Jane?..... Not this hotel!!”

The Plaine

I wanted to whisk my over-worked loved one to somewhere "in the countryside" but with a town of character and interest nearby. So I went online and discovered Bath and it's surrounding villages.
I decided on The Plaine, in Norton St Phillip just outside Bath. We had a lovely drive down through beautiful English countryside.
On arrival we were greeted by Stephanie who showed us to our room and even carried by exceptionally heavy bag! Brave lady!
Our room was a very pretty lemon colour with a four poster bed but not in the least bit twee. We had a relaxing first evening and ate in The George, literally across the road. The venison melted in the mouth and Loved One's chicken was delicious.
After a glorious night's sleep in the comfiest bed on the Planet, Stephanie cooked us a delicious breakfast using local products.
I was a bit concerned that we were slightly TOO far out of Bath, but didn't need to be as there is a bus stop right outside The Plaine that takes you to the town centre, with beautiful scenery on the way. I'd recommend the bus as parking in a strange place can be quite daunting.
After a whole day of shopping we went to a local pub for dinner in the evening. Our last full day was warm and sunny and both Stephanie and Giles gave us a lot of ideas for places to visit. So we went to them all!
We came home totally relaxed and with bag fulls of shopping. I'd recommend anyone to stay at The Plaine, it's almost like going to stay with family. I wish Stephanie and Giles many happy years in their wonderful hotel.

“Not at all Plaine!”

The Plaine

Mar 31, 2008

Just back from an excellent 3 day stay.

The Plaine in Norton St Phillip, is about 7 miles from Bath, in a beautiful village steeped in history. There are 2 pubs right on the doorstep, The George, apparently England's oldest, which serves great food in their restaurant, and the Fleur de Lys, which was very friendly for a drink(if you could understand the accents!)

The Plaine itself is a lovely building, dating from around the 16th Century(though stand to be corrected), very clean and tidy throughout.

The room itself had a four-poster bed, and possibly the most relaxing mattress i've ever slept in whilst travelling, that combined with the quietness and almost total darkness of the area helped me to the best sleep over the three nights i've had in years.

The hosts, Stephanie and Giles couldn't have been friendlier, always there to help or answer any questions, but also left you to your own devices so you didn't feel like an interloper in their home which can be the impression from some other places I've stayed at.

The full English breakfast was delicious, and set us up perfectly for a day of site-seeing, the sausages and bacon so nice we had to stop off at the local Farm shop they sourced it from to buy our own to take home.

All in all, I have no hesitation in recommending The Plaine to anybody who wishes to visit the area, and is a great base for exploring the local area.

“Great personal touch”

The Plaine

Had a lovely weekend break here. Owners give a great personal touch and we felt well-looked after. The breakfast is great and the accomodation is atmospheric and comfortable.

It is just outside Bath and the city is serviced by an hourly bus which departs from just outside the guest house. A preferable way of doing things as driving and parking around the centre is horendous. The bus also runs late enough to enjoy an evening out in town.

I would happily recommend The Plaine to anyone who likes a city-break, but also likes a walk in the countryside as it offers the best of both worlds.

Incidently, we left in such a good mood we accidentaly left some documents behind. But Stephanie (proprietor) sent these back to us very swiftly and with no fuss.

Thanks for a great stay!

Spent 2 nights at the Plaine Norton St Philip, Bath, wonderful B & B - very welcoming, excellent breakfast and fabulous location. Easy to travel into Bath using the bus which stops outside and avoids the congestion problems. very relaxing, an ideal location to use as a base to explore the area. Two excellent pubs nearby to eat and enjoy the evening. Thanks Giles and Steph you were excellent hosts!
