We saw so much wildlife on this trail, it was hard to remember that it was really wildlife and not a zoo. We went in early March, and all the birds were out (it was around 3 pm), puffing their feathers and singing or putting on mating behavior. And there were so many alligators! Some were just laying around sleeping, and others were swimming through the water. We spent a lot longer on the trail than we planned to because there was so much going! It is definitely a do-not-miss if you're heading into the everglades!
The trail itself is very short (0.5 miles), but remember to put on sunscreen, wear a broad brimmed hat, etc.. It's very close to the entrance to the everglades, if you're entering through the homestead/florida city entrance.. When you come into the everglades, there's one visitor center (i think it's the ernest coe visitor center), with some displays and other interesting things (we saw a tree snail there!), and then four miles from the ernest coe visitor center is the royal palm visitor center. It is from here that the anhinga trail starts. To the left is the anhinga trail, to the right is the gumbo-limbo trail. Bring lots of film/memory sticks if you walk these trails!
