Ok i am writing these few lines to put all the bad mouths to rest and actuallly give you the real scoop on the Sol Sirenas Coral. I have stayed there from May 31st to June 7th 2008. I have to admit, before leaving i had read a lot of the reviews posted and i had some worries as to what was waiting for me over there. People complaining on how it needs repainting, that there was rats, that the rooms smelled bad, etc. Well to my pleasant surprise all of these negative remarks were nothing but untrue!!! FALSE, FALSE, FALSE!!!!
1st of all, to all of you you are planning on going, you wont be disappointed as long as you keep in mind that you are going in a different country with a different culture and that yes it is Cuba. I have travelled in different islands in the caribean and i know that you cannot compare any of them with Cuba since they are on a different page than all of the others. And i must add that the Coral side is closing for about 2 months for renovations next week. Here is what you should expect:
-The beach is the most beautiful beach i have ever seen. Very clean with white sand and the water is such a clear blue that it takes your breath away. The Coral is situated on a 2-3 km stretch of the most widest and beautiful beach in Varadero. Worth every penny of the trip.
-The food is Cuban stylle food which means very simple but very good. The 2 buffets offer pretty much the same thing but i have to strongly recommend to book all the "a la carte" restaurants as it is very much worth it. The buffets are great for breakfast and then you have the 24hr snack bar with amazing tuna sandwiches and hamburgers and also the Ranchon restaurant right next to the beach which has great chicken brochettes and just great food overall. So even if you're picky about food in buffets, you have plenty of choice of restaurants with great choices of food which you can diversify throughout your trip. My tip to you is to book in the morning around 8-30 9am every day second day in order to have your week worry less for your restaurants. The asian restaurant AMAZING and also the italian one very good. The Grill is good and the mediterean is ok but still way better than the buffets!
-The rooms are typical of Cuba. Very simple and basic but very spacy and with every thing you need. We had a view on the bayside and the sunrise was awesome. Dont expect the same luxury and comfort as a typical north american 4star hotel. THIS IS CUBA PEOPLE! As long as the sheets are clean, the towels changed everyday and toilet paper always available thats all that really matters because trust me, most of your time will be spent outside! But oevrall nothing bad or negative to say about the rooms as they are typical of caribean rooms.
-The hotel is very nice and very spacious. You sort of feel as if you were in a miniature village. With the 2 hotels combined together, it offers you plenty of activities and things to do and services to offer. YOU have 2 shops, a hair salon, a shooting court, tennis court, minigolf court, SEVERAL bars for any time of the day, 2 pools including one on the Coral side which is huge and very enoyable with is inwater platform which you can lay on and still stay cool by being half way in the water. They are kept very clean. There is also a 3rd one near the beach which seems made more for people who like to do laps but that one i have to admit is not always kept clean since no one goes in it.
-The activities are very well organized. I have to admit that this hotel is made for any type of travellor. Young to old to families and couples, everybody will find their interest. They have activities in the morning on the beach, they have a show every night at 9:45 and then the activity crew brings you every night (for those you want to go) to a different club with all the other tourists from the other hotels to all go out. The lobby bars are always busy with people meeting with one another and chatting and the Havana Cafe is a great closed-up air-conditionned place where you can have a drink and go dance if you wish. Its a cool hang out place but of what i have heard, it closes around 1am. For all of oyu you like water activities, they have pedalo, catamaran, kayak, etc. They have a lot of other activities with a fee, such as horseback riding (1hr 15pesos), snorkelling excursion (2hrs 20pesos), havana trip (1day 85pesos), banana boat ride (20min 5 pesos), etc. They are very much worth it as they make you discover very interesting sides of the area that you cant discover and enjoy by staying at the hotel. They make you fall in love with the place and make your trip amazing and unforgettable!
I also wanted to mention that there is a lot of mosquitos a night. So make sure you bring a lot of repellent or bug lotion because they are voracious. They sting you all over and they all come out at night and you dont even realize you are beaing bit until you wake up the next morning with your legs full of red bumps! As for the staff, they are very polite and courtious. They will always say Hola!. And yes they are not always as efficient as in North America but let me point out that in Cuba (like in any other caribean island) people are not as stressed out and in a hurry as us. So in their culture they take life easy and they have no worries. So if you have any issue of some sort, dont panic if they seem to take forever to fix it. Thats how they are, just remind them politely and with a smile and you will always have great service. Me and my sister had brought a lot fo clothes and we left it to our maid during the week there and that meant to world to her and they will give back with what they can trust me!
If you can take a trip downtown Varadero which is about 5-10 minutes by cab (5pesos worth) or by walk which takes about 15-20 minutes. It is worth is as you will get a taste of the Cuban culture. Also the debit cards are useless over there and collect calls do not work.
I have to agree a lot with the comments of the previous person who wrote that the trip is an adventure. You have to stay open minded as you are going in a whole different coutnry with a totally different culture. But please ignore bad comments as they do not reflect at all the true nature of this resort. On top of it, when the Coral side reopens, it will be completely renovated and beautiful to stay at. So on that note, i give this hotel 2 thumbs up and remind you to forget the bad comments as they are not an accurate and justifiable reflection of this AWESOME resort!
