We booked at Hotel Atarazana after reading the reviews on this site. It surpassed our expectations. Our flight ended up being about 12 hours late, due to bad weather, and our flights were changed several times throughout theday. This utimately put us in Santo Domingo after midnight. I had managed to email Susanne several times from my cell phone, and let her know when we'd finally be arriving. Much to our delight, when we came off the gate, there was a taxi driver sent by Susanne, holding a sign with my name on it! After the hellish day we'd been through, it was pure heaven to have someone waiting! The price was about $60 from the airport to the hotel, but the taxi driver had been back and forth to the airport a number of times for us that day and had waited around for us quite a bit, so that seemed quite reasonable. I think the regular rate is $25-30.
As we sped along through the city, I was very glad we'd had Susanne send the taxi. Had we simply hired one at the airport in the middle of the night, I think I would have been worried about where he was taking us, as some of the areas we passed through seemed a bit dodgy, particularly at 1 a.m. When we finally got to the hotel, it was heaven. It was absolutely gorgeous. Susanne was still up, and greeted us with cocktails. She chatted with us for a bit, and then sent us off to bed.
The next day, Susanne and Bernie were totally helpful with suggestions. We spent a pleasant few days wandering around the Zona Colonial. The hotel is perfectly situated for exploring, and we had a blast. Unfortunately, our luggage did not arrive during the few days that we spent there, but Susanne helped by making calls repeatedly, trying to track it down for us (her Spanish was FAR better than ours!). Sadly, it didn't come, and we had to move on to the house we had rented out by La Romana to meet up with a group of friends. We were thrilled when, several days later, we received a call from Susanne at the house--our luggage had arrived at her hotel, and she wanted to know where to send it along! She offered to have a taxi driver send it. I wish I'd taken her up on her offer, because the driver sent by the staff of our expensive rental house charged more than twice what Susanne's driver had offered!!!!
Okay, so by now, you know that the owners are amazing. And the hotel? Gorgeous! It's recently renovated, and made of beautiful stone. The rooms are minimalist, but very nice, with clever and artistic furnishings. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the courtyard where breakfast is served. The coffee was amazing. The breakfasts were terrific. Don't miss the fabulous jam that they serve with the breads in the morning. There were several flavors, and I wish I'd asked what they were, because I've been dreaming of them since then. Evenings in the walled courtyard, which is beautifully planted and beautifully lit, with a water feature, were also fun, because it gave you a chance to chat with other travelers. It was a very international crowd when we were visiting.
All in all, we loved this place, and will of course stay there again!
