Introduction
As the title suggests, this hotel is brilliant "value for money". Discerning trip advisor viewing will have read previous reviews and on balance, will have probably concluded that the Gran Ventana is a good hotel. It is!
For those trip advisor viewers who are undecided whether or not to stay at Gran Ventana - GO! You will have a lovely time. The majority of previous posts review Gran Ventana favourably. Go with the majority! I visited Gran Ventana as a repeat guest. Repeat guests wear white instead of green wrist bands and there were a lot of white wrist bands around the pool! The volume of repeat guests is testament to the calibre of the hotel.
A holiday is what you make it. Personally, I go on holiday to enjoy myself and totally chill out and that is exactly what I did! Gran Ventana offers first rate service, food and accomodation. The standard of cleanliness is extremely high. The level of service from all staff was exceptional (British service industry workers could learn a thing or two from their Domincan counterparts!) Always busy, always smiling, always saying "Hola!" If a total chill-out holiday is not for you, then Gran Ventana may not be for you (but that's not the hotel's fault - its the holiday makers for not doing their homework before they go!)
Food
The quality and range of food on offer was excellent. I last visited in 2005 and the buffet restaurant was even better than I remember. I am not a fussy eater and enjoyed sampling different foods. However, my children have a more limited capacity to try new foods, but again there was plenty for them to choose from. The newly refurbished Ocean Grill was wonderful and the grouper fillet (type of fish) and BBQ ribs deserves a special mention. All restaurants' waiting staff were friendly and attentive and they always remembered who has ordered what food. The wine waiters were particularly attentive - 2 sips of wine and your glass was full again!!
Accomodation
We stayed in Saona block room 1238. This was on the 1st floor and overlooked the wedding gazebo and had a partial sea view. It was a really lovely spot. Other members of our party also stayed in Saona block, but had a ground floor room with a different outlook. Their room (1110)was exactly the same as ours, but did seem a bit darker. Maid service was daily, and included towel change and mini-bar restock. The Catalina block re-opened during our stay - it was done in stages and was not quite operating on full capacity when we left (19/7/08) but will probably be fully operational now. NB - my new but cheap hair staighteners worked fine with adaptor.
During the day
As we have been to the Puerto Plata area 4 times, we decided not to do any trips this time as we have done most of the popular ones already. We spent our days lazing by the pool or chilling out on the beach. This was more than enough to keep us happy. As the hotel is situated by the beach you can alternate your sunbathing time quite easily between the two. Our children aged 10 and 12 kept themselves occupied in the pool, playing table tennis, reading or playing pool. They also enjoyed ordering their own non-alcoholic cocktails. On the beach we all enjoyed snorkelling and kayaking. We all enjoy just lazing around - others might find this too boring. However, if you do 2 or 3 trips during your stay, this should liven things up for those with a low boredom threshold.
Night time
As previous reviews have stated, the night time entertainment is the only thing that lets the hotel down. The nights that outside entertainers visited were the best - we really enjoyed the band which played a mixture of music from merengue to reggae to Elvis! We enjoyed getting up for a dance and the dance floor was always busy. However, we went on holiday for the sun and relaxation - not the nightlife (we can do that quite easily back home). Those travelling with teenage children or young couples may be bored though, but just 5 minutes walk away is the plaza which has a small selection of bars and night club.
Medical care
Although none of our party had dodgy tummies whilst away, 3 of our party visited the medical centre (situated in the plaza) with chest, throat or ear infections. The medical care was first class - very slick and efficient. Our insurance was with Direct Line which meant we had no excess to pay which was an added bonus. The doctor prescribed about 4 different medications per medical condition, which meant the infection was "blasted" with medication, recovery was very quick and the "patients" could get back to enjoying their holiday as quickly as possible. Take note NHS!
Money
As we didn't do any trips this time - we spent very little (£250) during the fortnight. This was mainly spent on tips and presents to take home. Pretty good for a family of 4? We didn't even have to buy bottled water as that is provided. Exchange rate was approx 60 pesos to the £ and 34 pesos to the $.
Tour operator
We flew with First Choice and would recommend them. Our flight was delayed by 12 hours - First Choice knew about this in advance and transferred us to the Victoria Hotel for an extra night's stay. We enjoyed an extra afternoon and evening of fun and the all-inclusive facilities at the Victoria. Fantastic! We didn't even have to pay departure tax as First Choice include this in their holiday price.
To sum up
Where else could a family of 4 eat, drink, relax and be attended to in immaculate and safe surroundings for under £3500? Bearing in mind it was peak season and we flew from our preferred airport. We have tried self-catering in the Canaries and Greece and spent the same amount of money (and that was without eating and drinking the same amount as we did in the Dom Rep). We may receive slightly better standard of accomodation in another Caribbean island, but not flying from our preferred airport and for a lot more money. Thanks Gran Ventana for a wonderful holiday!
