My boyfriend and I just returned from a 9 day vacation to Sunscape casa del mar and what a beautiful resort...unfortunately there are some things that really need to be worked on. My boyfriend and I are both 25 and have been on all inclusive vacations before so we knew what to expect based on the stars. We never complained but some things just need to be known before you go away and set unrealistic expectations. I searched for 2 weeks online, looked at almost every resort and destination spot with DR on the top of the list. I read some bad reviews so I was weary but soon realized that almost every resort has some bad reviews..people will find anything to complain about. So anyway I booked though cheap carribean and received a pretty good price with just a standard room that looked nice in the picture. First off its not in La Romana its a little further in a town called bayahibe which is nice but very far from the airport. 90 min if there is no traffic, but on the day we arrived it was some kind of election parade in the streets and it took us over 3 hours to get there. A lot of poverty on the streets on the way there and people trying to sell you things through the window. We booked round trip shuttle service through cheap carribean which was well worth it! It is expensive to take your own cab so pre-plan it..trust me. Plus you are with other people in a nice air conditioned van. Finally when we arrived we were greeted by the friendly bell staff which we made friends with, but unfortunately the front desk changed our mood. Not friendly at all and very bad english if you are. We were told our room was not ready and to go eat. 20 Min later we went to the room and oh boy what a disaster. We booked the standard room which looked nice in the picture but disastrous in person. It was dirty and old with chipped paint, a gross bathroom dimly lit that looked like a budget lodge. 1980 tv thats so small and the sliding door was jammed. The air was stuck on 60 degrees or nothing at all. The safe looked like a jailcell safe and bugs in the closet. WE IMMEDIATELY called and complained and they said "you book through cheap carribean you get what you pay for"! Now our vacation wasnt cheap nor was it really expensive but enough to have a clean room. So we complained and complained and they would not do anything until they said you can upgrade $30 a night per person instead of $60 so we did it. We could not handle that disgusting room for 9 days! The upgraded room was beautiful, new, well lit and had a comfortable bed. 50 times better than the other. That should not be in a 4 star resort. We did keep in mind that they are changing to a 5/6 star this month and upgrading all the rooms but we were still not happy with that crap room. THe new room was in building 3, apparently the new buildings are 1 and 3. 3 is right by the new infinity pool which is gorgeous and has an awesome swim up bar. When we got there they said no wifi and if we did want it we had to pay 15 dollars per day for every day or use their computers. Come to find out they lied and we picked up wifi on our computer the last day. If you sit close to the internet cafe you can get a free signal. Another way they try to get money out of yoo..dont pay! lobby is nice with comfy couches. Small lobby bar with a only a few premium alcohols but gone very fast. Dont expect any beer except presidente which was pretty good. Drinks are house crap which I never heard of but will get u drunk but with a really bad hangover! Lobby bar staff is awesome braulio is the best. We tippped him and he always took care of us. They dont expect tips but they deserve them. Frozen drinks are very watery sometimes but you can find who makes good drinks. If you are lucky you will see smirnoff, absolute and jim bean..a few others but not much. Drink the mamijuana it is very strong and good. Walk around the grounds when you get there it is beautifulll!!! THe spa is amazing and great picture taking spot. THe beaches are unreal..beautiful white sand with tons of palm trees. Small for the resort but nice. Lots of chairs and loungers not need to reserve them early. There were a lot of europeans..french, german italian and so on..lots of topless tanning which didnt really bother us..just mind ur own business everyone is different. Bring snorkel equiment because you can only rent theres for an hour per day. Nice are right in front of resort to snorkel. Kayaking and paddle boats icluded but 30 min at a time. everything else costs money. DO the catalina island trip it is awesome..and go to casa de campo and see the village..it was the best thing we did absolutely breathtaking views. THe food was very good, not gourmet but tasty and good. There are a bunch of restaurants so a wide variety to choose from. Da maurio the italion place was our favoriteand the best service. The buffet was good with wide a wide variety but it gets old. SOme nights they had a themed buffet which was nice. Seaside grill was very good too, but not always open. Overall the food was good and there was pizza and hotdogs at the pool and beach. The service was the BEST part of our trip. The dominicans are so friendly and nice and smart. They all know somewhat basic english and some know a bunch of languages. They always say hola and get wahtever you need. We tipped at dinner and at the bars they work hard for you. I suggest learning some basic spanish because it really helps and also bring small bills its hard to get change. The pools are awesome and there is a hidden hot tub over on the beach side that was really nice but broken..it was very warm though.
Overall the resort is very beautiful and we loved it! If they upgrade all the rooms and improve the alcholic beverages it could be a five star. Have fun!
