I feel I owe this to readers planning their trip since Trip Advisor was so helpful for us. We read some scary food reviews a few weeks prior and thought of switching and are very glad we did not. This is our 4th trip to DR and the best resort so far. We went May 11 thru 16, 2008
Just to give you an idea our review is based on the fact that we are in our mid-40s going for a quick 5 nights w/out kids. We really just go to do nothing. We love the sun and only one of us drinks. The beach is one of our favorite and we have been to Jamaica, Mexico, St. John's, Hawaii, etc. and it once again didn't disappoint us.
The usual arrival with the $10 per person entry pay for a piece of paper and give it back one minute later. A few stops at other resorts on the way to ours. The room was not ready at 1:30 but we were told to eat and come back. We chose to go book our dinner as suggested on TA. One lady at the desk was telling people the LeGourmet was booked for the whole week. We went over there and got in at 7:30 that night and again on Wed at 6:30 and reserved at Japanese for Tuesday at 8pm - 6:30 was already taken. we asked for 2 there on recommendations that it was real good but only got in once. LeGourmet the first night we both got the shrimp salad, pumpkin soup, chicken and two different desserts. The stuff with the chicken was a little heavy but overall very good meal. The second time we did the tenderloin that was highly recommended and it was better. I also did the other soup - lobster and that was very good. Japanese was a good meal also. We went to the steak house the other two nights and went with the Chaeteaubrind as recommended and that was very good. The second time I tried the meat on skewers and it was covered with bar-b-q sauce and I should have stuck with the tried and true but it was not bad. My husband had the grilled pork chop and that was good he said. Service is good although they don't ask if everything is okay once you get your food!! But it was. It was nice to have proprtioned meals and not buffet. Very nice to see the ocean at the steakhouse. We had no stomach troubles. we don't drink anything but the bottled water. As said, my husband said the wines were eh but they were very prompt to keep the glass full at all times. Same with saki at Japanese. Fried ice cream was good. No dessert on menu at steakhouse but a buffet type to pick from. Overall, we have had way worse at all inclusives and enjoyed going out each night compared to others always needing reservations and having hard time to get them.
The room we e-mailed Richard prior but not sure that that helped. We were in Bldg 2 2322 and it was a pool view. The higher the number the closer to getting an ocean view looking to one side. I am a smell person and these rooms had no musty smell. I brought room freshener and febreeze for the bed but did not need any of it. This was a first compared to other places and very pleasing. We did tip one day to see if we'd get flowers but to no avail....only on our arrival. We used the bottle water to brush with always.
You can get bottled water at any bar which was real nice compared to plastic cups at other places. Not being a drinker this was a plus for me.
We never used the pool but it is like the reviews say. We don't need shade so at the beach we didn't need a hut but did see them reserved early with towels. We go to bake ourselves and never use them.
Our tv remote didn't work; we took it before the Michael Jackson show and when we came back there was another one that worked - that was the only thing that we had go wrong!!! Don't know what others complain about. We don't go expecting the hotel to be in charge of our entertainment. We finally went to the MJackson show after all these visits, it was entertaining - had forgotten all of his songs!! But our typical day was breakffast, lay on the beach, clean up dinner and done.
The walk to the shopping huts on the beach took about 2 hours round trip w/getting t-shirts. We did do our pictures by one of their photographers on the beach and they do a great job. but it's $10/picture or $10 each pic on a CD. Go thru the pictures and say yes or not to them and then they will negotiate. We had two printed and got a CD with the rest. It does work at home thankfully. We were able to walk in the other direction farther and saw some new resort going in.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay and was very pleased with the resort. We would return there. I would recommend Bldgs 2 or 3, getting dinner reservations right away and having a positive attitude!! Oh yeah, the bathroom towels are like sand paper though - the beach towels were softer and after a day in the sun they were rough that would be our one complaint - not bad though. We saw a wedding each day and they seem to take great pride in their weddings.
Hope this helps someone - any questions are welcome.
