Our family of four (kids 8 and 10) spent a week here in April. We enjoyed our simple but comfortable cottage. Although we didn't have a view of the water, we looked out on beautiful gardens. Breakfast was delicious with a variety of local jams and honey and our kids loved the local hot chocolate. The pool was clean and refreshing and the fabulous Grand Anse Beach with clear water and waves that were big, but not too big, was only a five minute walk away. Deshaies was a nice little town close by and after staying two nights near Pointe-a-Pitre, we were really glad that most of our vacation was on Basse Terre.
It's a little bit hard to know how to review the Caraib'Bay Hotel. Our cottage could have used a bit of fixing up. The kitchen needed some updating and the upstairs air conditioner leaked; we had to leave pans under it or it would leak through the floor and onto the room below.
The biggest problem, however, and I think we were just unlucky, as others haven't emphasized this (it had rained a lot right before we arrived), was that there were quite a few mosquitoes around. We couldn't eat outside on the porch where there was a table without getting bitten, so we ended up scrunched around the coffee table inside. We were bitten indoors, as well; my kids especially ended up with numerous bites. Despite keeping the door closed and even though the windows had screens, we could never get rid of all the mosquitos. Maybe they came in during the day when the housecleaners aired the place out.
To the credit of the owners, they couldn't have been more helpful.
They thoroughly cleaned the room and then actually had someone install mosquito nets over the kids' beds. We did all have to wear mosquito repellent, night and day, though.
Despite the insect bites, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and there are really two reasons, the first being the beautiful location and the second being the owners and staff of the Caraib'Bay Hotel. I can't emphasize enough how concerned, kind and friendly they are. We speak mediocre French and we had heard that people on Guadeloupe weren't always very accommodating to English speakers. Actually, we didn't find that to be the case on Guadeloupe at all, but especially at the Caraib'Bay Hotel, people really went out of their way to communicate with us, even when it took a while. Their recommendations for restaurants, sight seeing and beaches were great and they seemed genuinely interested in helping our trip be as good as possible. Our family loved Guadeloupe and if we return, I'm sure we'll stay at the Caraib'Bay Hotel again.
