My husband and I stayed at this property for six nights on a 2-week Martinique and Guadeloupe adventure. This hotel was superior by leaps and bounds to any other property (four of them on the trip) we stayed in-- even those that had been given a higher-star rating.

The reservation process was painless via e-mail to the property directly and they accomodated us 100% (e.g. allowing us to pay in traveler's checks, which is often difficult to be able to do in this region).

The bungalows are amazingly roomy and extremely comfortable. What we enjoyed was the in-room kitchenette that allowed us to save on a bit of money by preparing lunches ourselves everyday. Also, it was nice to have a sitting area downstairs, separate from the upstairs bedroom-- especially when you're away from home for a while. Everything was spotlessly clean.

The staff was incredibly friendly and willing to help you out in any way possible. It is also important to note that if you are an anglophone/ a non- French speaker, that this hotel had the best English-speaking staff we encountered anywhere on our trip. Every single person on staff was truly friendly and wanted you to feel at home.

The pool is sparkling clean if you wanted to take a dip or two after the beach. Also, Grande Anse beach is just a straight shot down the road which was the best beach we encountered in Guadeloupe.

There is absolutely nothing to fault with this property and we would stay here again without hesitation.

“Friendly and accommodating”

Caraib'Bay Hotel

Our family of four (kids 8 and 10) spent a week here in April. We enjoyed our simple but comfortable cottage. Although we didn't have a view of the water, we looked out on beautiful gardens. Breakfast was delicious with a variety of local jams and honey and our kids loved the local hot chocolate. The pool was clean and refreshing and the fabulous Grand Anse Beach with clear water and waves that were big, but not too big, was only a five minute walk away. Deshaies was a nice little town close by and after staying two nights near Pointe-a-Pitre, we were really glad that most of our vacation was on Basse Terre.
It's a little bit hard to know how to review the Caraib'Bay Hotel. Our cottage could have used a bit of fixing up. The kitchen needed some updating and the upstairs air conditioner leaked; we had to leave pans under it or it would leak through the floor and onto the room below.
The biggest problem, however, and I think we were just unlucky, as others haven't emphasized this (it had rained a lot right before we arrived), was that there were quite a few mosquitoes around. We couldn't eat outside on the porch where there was a table without getting bitten, so we ended up scrunched around the coffee table inside. We were bitten indoors, as well; my kids especially ended up with numerous bites. Despite keeping the door closed and even though the windows had screens, we could never get rid of all the mosquitos. Maybe they came in during the day when the housecleaners aired the place out.
To the credit of the owners, they couldn't have been more helpful.
They thoroughly cleaned the room and then actually had someone install mosquito nets over the kids' beds. We did all have to wear mosquito repellent, night and day, though.
Despite the insect bites, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and there are really two reasons, the first being the beautiful location and the second being the owners and staff of the Caraib'Bay Hotel. I can't emphasize enough how concerned, kind and friendly they are. We speak mediocre French and we had heard that people on Guadeloupe weren't always very accommodating to English speakers. Actually, we didn't find that to be the case on Guadeloupe at all, but especially at the Caraib'Bay Hotel, people really went out of their way to communicate with us, even when it took a while. Their recommendations for restaurants, sight seeing and beaches were great and they seemed genuinely interested in helping our trip be as good as possible. Our family loved Guadeloupe and if we return, I'm sure we'll stay at the Caraib'Bay Hotel again.

“nice enivronment”

Caraib'Bay Hotel

nice little houses immersed in a botanic garden. The hotel is located in the less turistic part of the isle, near the most beautiful and savage beach (grand anse). Nice environment. Only negative point: breakfast a bit disappointing (limited variety)

“Great place for American families to stay”

Caraib'Bay Hotel

We decided to stay here based on the other positive reviews and were not disappointed. We usually rent a house on our own, but were glad we decided to stay here because the advice we received by Benoit improved the quality of our trip. While there is an orientation on the island for the French visitors, Benoit will give you a separate in English. He will describe the island's attractions and hikes, recommend restaurants, and make any reservations you need (this was especially helpful). Benoit's wife and a few of the other workers speak a little French, but everyone was very friendly and helpful.

The villas are mostly occupied with French families. There's plenty of space to spread out and parents can get some privacy by having the kids beds set up downstairs. The rooms are not fancy, but are comfortable. There's air conditioning upstairs, but there's usually a nice cool breeze so you don't need it. Each villa houses two units. We had enough hot water from the solar heater and the bathroom was reasonably sized. There's a small stove and refrigerator. Our rooms received cleaning service Mon - Fri. There's a nice patio outside, but a few mosquitoes start to come out after dark. Large windows provide enough light during the day, but they could have used a few more light bulbs to make it easier to read after the early sunset. If you are a light sleeper, I'd advise bringing some earplugs because the nearby road can be a bit noisy along with some of the insects and winds.

The buildings are spread out around the lush gardens. There's a pool which is good for young children who might find Grande Anse a little rough. Each morning there is a breakfast buffet of rolls, many exotic jams and jellies, brie cheese, local fruit, juices, and some cereals. They will also make hot chocolate if you are interested. In the evenings, you can get drinks from the bar.

The hotel is right outside Deshaies, which has several good restaurants serving Creole food. The hotel also makes a good base for exploring the entire island of Basse Terre. See my 2 long writeups in the Guadeloupe forums for our favorite restaurants and attractions along with useful information for families and English-speakers.

“Beautiful villa in hotel grounds”

Caraib'Bay Hotel

Apr 14, 2008

We stayed in the villa for a week at the end of March. It was very private from the rest of the hotel, with magnificent view and large open deck. The rooms are decorated individually by local artists, and the details are fantastic, as is the outdoor kitchen.
We appreciated the effort the staff made to help us enjoy the stay, and get the most out of the Basse Terre side of the island.
The Grande Anse beach is beautiful, but it is definitely worth hiring a car to see the other places too. The Acomat waterfall was fantastic.
