“Enjoyable Stay at SATP”

Sunset at the Palms

3 of 5 stars
Illinois

We very much enjoyed our stay at SATP. The grounds, hotel, beach, etc., were beautiful. Majority of the staff were very nice, except the last day/night before we left and many were making it very clear that they expected a tip. We usually tip staff as the week goes by and were kind of taken back by this. Most of the food was good. Not a great deal of variety, but usually plentiful and fresh. As far as walking to the beach - not a big deal at all. Large resorts have a further walk than this. The beach bar and grill provided plenty of food and drink. The beach itself was very nice, providing shade or sun. If you are looking for something to eat or snack on at the hotel after the lunch buffet closes (until dinner), you must go the beach grill. I really think if would be nice to be able to get some type of snacks/food around the pool area during this time.

I really want to address the accomodations. While the tree house rooms were great and we loved the porches, the lighting is horrible! ALL of the switches for ALL of the lights are on the wall as soon as you walk in to the room. There are only two bedside lamps in the sleeping area with very low voltage bulbs. You cannot turn these lights on without getting up and going to the hallway to do so. There are two lights in the bathroom, also with very low voltage bulbs and only accessible in the hall. There is no ventilation in the bathroom, so after showering they are very steamy. The only mirror is above the sink in the bathroom - no full length mirror. Hair dryer, iron/ironing board, instant tea and coffee are provided in the room.

All in all we enjoyed our stay. Like everyone has said it is a very low key resort and very relaxing.

“Peaceful and Beautiful”

My husband and I just got back from 1 week at Sunset at the Palms. The property is beautiful and extremely quiet. If you're wanting activities and lots of excitement, SATP is not for you. If you're looking for a great place to relax with no worries, then this is the perfect spot. Our treehouse room was awesome, very private and comfortable. The employees were AWESOME! They were extremely friendly, especially the bartenders. We did have to cross the road to get to the beach, but it really wasn't a huge deal. Traffic wasn't bad, and they have a crossing guard to stop it if need be. If there was one downside, i would have to say it was breakfast. It was pretty much the same thing every morning, so after 1 week I was ready for something different. We met so many couples who were staying there. Other than the couple who stole our towels while we ate lunch (we thought that was kind of rude) everyone was really friendly. I would definitely stay there again.

“Great, relaxing vacation at Sunset at the Palms”

Sunset at the Palms

My fiance and I recently stayed for 4 nights at the Sunset at the Palms. It was really a wonderful vacation. We scheduled the trip because friends of ours were staying down the road at Beaches and were getting married there. We made the decision to stay at Sunset instead because the reviews on this site were so positive for sunset, and because we didn't want to spend our entire vacation with lots of kids running everywhere and with Sesame Street characters. We made an excellent choice.

As other reviewers have stated, the grounds at the resort are immaculate and the staff is very good and accomodating. It's amazing how much labor really goes into maintaining the place. All of the facilities are very, very nice, and the room was very spacious and nice. I loved the shower and the daybed on the porch. The only complaints I could possibly have are that our room was #604, right next to the road. I couldn't hear the RIU resort much at all, but the traffic was noticeable. I didn't think it was that big of a deal though. Also, I wasn't as impressed with the food as many other reviewers. I thought it was okay, but I'd recommend going to the beach grill and the buffet and not going to the sit down restaurant. It was fine, but it was basically the same food as the buffet, just dressed up a bit. If you want real Jamaican food I think you'd better go to a place that serves locals. The resort food seems to be just a bit dumbed down.

What we liked most about the Sunset was the nice, quiet beach. It had lots of shade, and the water and sand was beautiful. We spent at least half of all our days there. As others have commented, the peddlers there weren't a problem. We were asked if we were interested in everything from braids to snorkeling and boating to ganja, but one simple, polite "no thank you" was all it took. No big deal.

The lazy pool, swim up bar, and hot tub were nice features of the resort as well. We went back to our room fairly early, probably 10ish, on the 2 nights that we weren't at beaches, so we didn't really take in much of the entertainment, but we couldn't hear much of anything in our room except for a bit of traffic. I'd definitely recommend the Sunset at the Palms to anyone looking for a nice, relaxing, and quiet vacation in the sun. If you're looking for a place to party, dance, and stay up late, this probably isn't the place for you. We made a great choice staying here instead of Beaches, though. Beaches is an incredibly impressive resort, but it wasn't as quiet or relaxed, and it was much, much more crowded. I guess it just depends on what your priorities are.

One final thing is that Hunter was our driver from the resort to and from Montego Bay, and he took us to Rick's. Ask for him and he'll take good care of you.

“Near perfection, and close to paradise”

Sunset at the Palms

5 of 5 stars

11/11 found this review helpful

My wife and I stayed at sunset at the palms for 2 weeks Jan 14th-Jan 28th and had one of the best and most relaxing holidays of our lives. No real complaints but a few niggles here and there although I have given the hotel 5/5. The only reason I have done this is because I can't give is 4.9/5.

We made the decision to go to Sunset after reading all the excellent reviews on trip advisor and I just have to add another one. There are no words or pictures that really do the hotel and its grounds justice, it is a breathtaking place. The gardens are sublime with palm trees, tropical plants, little rivers flowing through (only after it rains) and lovely little bridges dotted around. All this plant life makes a perfect habitat for wildlife with hummingbirds buzzing around and tree frogs singing in the night. We even saw a couple of land crabs.

The rooms are superb also, so much space. The bed is so comfy, much comfier than my own at home. Each room has tea/coffee, cable TV, a/c, ceiling fan and a huge private balcony with daybed and table/chairs. The bathroom is huge and the shower is beyond belief. We've been disappointed with hotel rooms before but ours was a room that you could never get tired of and never feel claustraphobic. There are no glass windows in the room, windows are covered in netting and have wooden slatted shutters. These keep most of the bugs out but we did get bit in the night by something. Can be avoided if you have some kind of repelant and cover up in the night with a thin sheet.

The only issue we had with the room was nothing to do with sunset at all but I just want to make a point about it. We were in room 608 and this is very close to the main road and unfortunately the RIU Tropical Bay. The road noise wasn't a problem, its part of life and was pretty quiet anyway, but what wasn't good was the noise coming from the RIU every night. Blood curdling screams, pounding bass from the music, shouting from its guests. Their music went on until 1am most nights and although we slept through it after we got used to it, it really does spoil the ambience of the resort. Many people we noticed only stayed in the 600 rooms 1 night before asking to move because of this and its a shame, but the hotel was pretty full and they didn't move far.

There are 3 bars in the hotel, the lobby bar, the pool bar and the beach bar. All manned by the friendliest staff we've ever known. It really is a personal experience being at this hotel The staff get to know you and if you make an effort to get to know them you will have a much better holiday. I want to say a big thanks to Garth, Rory and Greg and Omar who all made our holiday that little bit more special.
Most nights entertainment was around the Pool Bar. Some nights it was great (Moses the one man band, Foxtrot Band, the steel drum band etc) but some nights it was pretty awful (guest & staff talent show, disco). Its not that it was too crazy or anything just it was half hearted and was way out of sync with the resort itself. Entertainment should be kept chilled out and laid back at a place like this. There is football (proper football not american) on TV in the pool bar all day and night which didn't bother me but I guess some people dont like that. A group of 20 plus turned it over to NFL one night and were screaming and shouting at the TV for hours which held up the band that were about to play. By the time it had gone off the band only had time to do 2 songs, that was annoying.

The food is excellent, it really was faultless. At the buffet there is so much choice. Breakfast is the best I've known with everything you can imagine from bacon and sausages to french toast and papya. Lunch is also good and the selection seems random. Every night of the week dinner is a different theme but really its the same food dressed and seasoned a little differently (i.e. Jerk Pork Chop on Jamaican night virtually the same as Japanese Pork Chop on Japanese night and Haiti Pork Chop on Carribean night) but never mind, it was really great. I just wish people would bear in mind this is a classy all inclusive, you can go back to eat AS MUCH as you like, there is no need to pile your plates high (sometimes taking two plates full at a time). It's the same with the drinks, there was one couple who seemed so greedy they had white wine, red wine, champagne and water on there table for one meal. How greedy can you be? ITs the same with Bubba Kegs, personally I thought there was no need for it, again, you can go back AS MANY TIMES AS YOU LIKE. There is no need for giant gallon bubba kegs. Some people even took them for coffee at breakfast. Absurd.

The lotus leaf al a carte is good. Great even. The menu gets boring as they only change it once a week but its ok, if you only go in once a week, which is what we did. There are not many tables and its very peaceful and romantic with a baby grand playing outside and candles burning on all the tables. Dress code is smart with collared shirt and long pants preferred and no open toe shoes for men. That's why we were a bit takren aback when a group of 18 Canadians came rolling in in flip flops and beach shorts shouting they wanted a table for 18 and generally being awful people. Throwing bread rolls at one another and shouting across a dining room of sublime beaty. Crazyness.

The beach bar is nice and the food is good. Really good jerk chicken and grilled cheese sandwhiches. We went there for lunch quite a lot.

The actual beach is by far the nicest on bloody bay. There is lots of shade and lots of sun, depending on what you want. The vendors get you when you go for a walk but they rarely bother you when you are lying in the sun. They dont wander around the sunbeds, only try to sell you stuff from the waters edge. Compare Sunsets beach to the RIU's beach and you'll know you've hit the jackpot. The RIUs beach is crowded with almost no shade and the sea isn't as nice there.

If you dont want the beach the pool is just as nice, rearely crowded with great loungers and a nice hot tub.

Negril town is really only worth going to once or twice, there is not much there. Wouldn't recomend the shopping 'centres' unless you want to buy a rolex or postcards. There are some good restaurants outside of the hotel though. Sweet Spice on Sheffield road is worth a taxi ride out and Selinas on the beach road does good breakfast. One note on taxis, it is not MUCH cheaper to get a taxi from the hotel grounds than it is to flag one down. Flagging one down can be a risky affair and often you dont know what is a legitemate taxi and what isn't. All taxis should have red plates but most that pulled up alongside us didn't and had 2/3 local men in already. A bit scary when they pull up alongside you and open their doors. We got in one guys taxi and asked to go to Ricks, he took us, but forgot to mention Ricks wasn't open yet and proceeded to take us further into the wilderness. We ended up going to the Lighthouse at Negril Point and back costing us $60. A joke really. On that note, we did make it to Ricks for the sunset using the hotels own afternoon tour, $10 each. Ricks is good to watch cliff diving but the food looked poor and was very expensive. I'd sooner eat at Sweet Spice.

There's not much left to say apart from Sunset at the Palms is a truly amazing place. Every day we felt lucky to still be there. We will most definately be back but not next year, we will try somewhere else, although I can imagine that nothing else could possibly compare.
