My wife and I stayed at sunset at the palms for 2 weeks Jan 14th-Jan 28th and had one of the best and most relaxing holidays of our lives. No real complaints but a few niggles here and there although I have given the hotel 5/5. The only reason I have done this is because I can't give is 4.9/5.
We made the decision to go to Sunset after reading all the excellent reviews on trip advisor and I just have to add another one. There are no words or pictures that really do the hotel and its grounds justice, it is a breathtaking place. The gardens are sublime with palm trees, tropical plants, little rivers flowing through (only after it rains) and lovely little bridges dotted around. All this plant life makes a perfect habitat for wildlife with hummingbirds buzzing around and tree frogs singing in the night. We even saw a couple of land crabs.
The rooms are superb also, so much space. The bed is so comfy, much comfier than my own at home. Each room has tea/coffee, cable TV, a/c, ceiling fan and a huge private balcony with daybed and table/chairs. The bathroom is huge and the shower is beyond belief. We've been disappointed with hotel rooms before but ours was a room that you could never get tired of and never feel claustraphobic. There are no glass windows in the room, windows are covered in netting and have wooden slatted shutters. These keep most of the bugs out but we did get bit in the night by something. Can be avoided if you have some kind of repelant and cover up in the night with a thin sheet.
The only issue we had with the room was nothing to do with sunset at all but I just want to make a point about it. We were in room 608 and this is very close to the main road and unfortunately the RIU Tropical Bay. The road noise wasn't a problem, its part of life and was pretty quiet anyway, but what wasn't good was the noise coming from the RIU every night. Blood curdling screams, pounding bass from the music, shouting from its guests. Their music went on until 1am most nights and although we slept through it after we got used to it, it really does spoil the ambience of the resort. Many people we noticed only stayed in the 600 rooms 1 night before asking to move because of this and its a shame, but the hotel was pretty full and they didn't move far.
There are 3 bars in the hotel, the lobby bar, the pool bar and the beach bar. All manned by the friendliest staff we've ever known. It really is a personal experience being at this hotel The staff get to know you and if you make an effort to get to know them you will have a much better holiday. I want to say a big thanks to Garth, Rory and Greg and Omar who all made our holiday that little bit more special.
Most nights entertainment was around the Pool Bar. Some nights it was great (Moses the one man band, Foxtrot Band, the steel drum band etc) but some nights it was pretty awful (guest & staff talent show, disco). Its not that it was too crazy or anything just it was half hearted and was way out of sync with the resort itself. Entertainment should be kept chilled out and laid back at a place like this. There is football (proper football not american) on TV in the pool bar all day and night which didn't bother me but I guess some people dont like that. A group of 20 plus turned it over to NFL one night and were screaming and shouting at the TV for hours which held up the band that were about to play. By the time it had gone off the band only had time to do 2 songs, that was annoying.
The food is excellent, it really was faultless. At the buffet there is so much choice. Breakfast is the best I've known with everything you can imagine from bacon and sausages to french toast and papya. Lunch is also good and the selection seems random. Every night of the week dinner is a different theme but really its the same food dressed and seasoned a little differently (i.e. Jerk Pork Chop on Jamaican night virtually the same as Japanese Pork Chop on Japanese night and Haiti Pork Chop on Carribean night) but never mind, it was really great. I just wish people would bear in mind this is a classy all inclusive, you can go back to eat AS MUCH as you like, there is no need to pile your plates high (sometimes taking two plates full at a time). It's the same with the drinks, there was one couple who seemed so greedy they had white wine, red wine, champagne and water on there table for one meal. How greedy can you be? ITs the same with Bubba Kegs, personally I thought there was no need for it, again, you can go back AS MANY TIMES AS YOU LIKE. There is no need for giant gallon bubba kegs. Some people even took them for coffee at breakfast. Absurd.
The lotus leaf al a carte is good. Great even. The menu gets boring as they only change it once a week but its ok, if you only go in once a week, which is what we did. There are not many tables and its very peaceful and romantic with a baby grand playing outside and candles burning on all the tables. Dress code is smart with collared shirt and long pants preferred and no open toe shoes for men. That's why we were a bit takren aback when a group of 18 Canadians came rolling in in flip flops and beach shorts shouting they wanted a table for 18 and generally being awful people. Throwing bread rolls at one another and shouting across a dining room of sublime beaty. Crazyness.
The beach bar is nice and the food is good. Really good jerk chicken and grilled cheese sandwhiches. We went there for lunch quite a lot.
The actual beach is by far the nicest on bloody bay. There is lots of shade and lots of sun, depending on what you want. The vendors get you when you go for a walk but they rarely bother you when you are lying in the sun. They dont wander around the sunbeds, only try to sell you stuff from the waters edge. Compare Sunsets beach to the RIU's beach and you'll know you've hit the jackpot. The RIUs beach is crowded with almost no shade and the sea isn't as nice there.
If you dont want the beach the pool is just as nice, rearely crowded with great loungers and a nice hot tub.
Negril town is really only worth going to once or twice, there is not much there. Wouldn't recomend the shopping 'centres' unless you want to buy a rolex or postcards. There are some good restaurants outside of the hotel though. Sweet Spice on Sheffield road is worth a taxi ride out and Selinas on the beach road does good breakfast. One note on taxis, it is not MUCH cheaper to get a taxi from the hotel grounds than it is to flag one down. Flagging one down can be a risky affair and often you dont know what is a legitemate taxi and what isn't. All taxis should have red plates but most that pulled up alongside us didn't and had 2/3 local men in already. A bit scary when they pull up alongside you and open their doors. We got in one guys taxi and asked to go to Ricks, he took us, but forgot to mention Ricks wasn't open yet and proceeded to take us further into the wilderness. We ended up going to the Lighthouse at Negril Point and back costing us $60. A joke really. On that note, we did make it to Ricks for the sunset using the hotels own afternoon tour, $10 each. Ricks is good to watch cliff diving but the food looked poor and was very expensive. I'd sooner eat at Sweet Spice.
There's not much left to say apart from Sunset at the Palms is a truly amazing place. Every day we felt lucky to still be there. We will most definately be back but not next year, we will try somewhere else, although I can imagine that nothing else could possibly compare.
