“Great SCUBA, very poor accomodations”

The diving is great and the dive crew is generally very nice, helpful, and experienced. It’s hard to imagine better diving anywhere. The food is very good and there’s plenty of it at the three tightly-scheduled meal times. That’s the good part. Now for the bad part.

The accommodations are terrible. The beds have uncomfortable mattresses with hard, flattened pillows. Paint is peeling, the showers leak, floor tiles are chipped and missing, doors and dresser drawers are warped so they no longer close, lampshades are worn and burnt, and wall fixtures are known to fall off. Perhaps worst, there’s no privacy as the windows facing out to the pathways have open shutters or translucent shades that become nearly transparent at night – when you want privacy most. The surrounding beach and resort area have some trash and building materials strewn about. The clubhouse has a friendly and eccentric atmosphere but is also dusty with cobwebs. Sand fleas invested the place. I guess there’s not much you can do about them on the beaches, but they were in the buildings, too, including our bed, leaving red itchy bumps for days after we departed.

Other than diving there’s almost nothing to do. You can join the owner, Gladys, in her nightly game of dominoes. Other games are in bad shape with pieces missing or items unusable. Bicycles for visitor use are kept outside all year round where they have rusted to the point of nearly being unusable and have been known to break down.

The gift shop, surprisingly, contains no aloe, aspirin, or toiletries. Souvenirs like t-shirts cost nearly double what they do on Grand Cayman. Almost everything costs extra at Pirate’s Point and the cost of renting scuba equipment for the week is about 70% of the purchase price for brand new equipment.

Finally, don’t think that the run-down condition of the place is unavoidable due to salty air or excessive heat, as you will be told by the staff. Gladys lives next door in one of the biggest, pristine, beautifully decorated houses you’ll find anywhere.

In my opinion, you can find similarly great diving and better accommodations for the same price, or great diving and equivalent accommodations for much less money elsewhere.

If you are looking for great food and great scuba there is no better place to go than Pirates Point Resort on Little Cayman Island. Little Cayman is a laid back, quiet island with some of the best if not the best scuba diving in the Carribean. Gladys Howard, owner and chef extraordinaire, provides her guests with a personal experience not to be missed. We have visited Little Cayman many times before but this was our first visit to Pirates Point and we will definately stay there again.

I was lucky enough to be able to make two trips to Little Cayman in 2006. Pirates Point in November and another resort in February. If you want to visit a resort where "EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME" including the guests, bottom time is only limited by your air and computer, and the food is as good as any high end restaurant you might go to, then Pirates Point should be your choice.

“Pirates Point is a fantastic place”

Pirates Point Resort

Pirates Point is a fantastic place primarily devoted to scuba diving, with a fun and enthusiastic staff led by the wonderful owner, Gladys Howard. There are so many dimensions to this place that it is hard to write a review of it. The main thing to do here is the diving, which is among the very best in the Caribbean with 100+ foot visability, great wall dives, nurse sharks, sea turtles, eagle rays, southern sting rays, friendly groupers (overly friendly to Shirley!), beautiful and abundant coral, and an attentive, fun and safe dive staff. There are non-divers who come here too and seem to find the resort and the natural beauty of the island captivating.

The food at Pirate's Point is first rate -- Gladys Howard was trained as a gourmet cook and it shows in the offerings from breakfast through dinner. Locals come to Pirates Point when they want a great meal or to celebrate a special occasion.

The "clubhouse" is filled with plaques and other objects made by the guests to commemorate their visit using only materials found in the natural environment around the island. Some of these objects are high art -- very realistic looking birds made out of local reeds for example -- others are just fun. Pirates Point always enters a "float" in the Pirates' Day and Mardi Gras parades (and possibly many other holidays through the year). When I was there, most of the guests came together as a large group to participate in the Pirates Day parade. They brought their own costumes from the States and designed and built a float based on the "Black Pearl" from Pirates of the Caribbean. The float and costumes were spectacular.

The island is small -- it only has 130-150 full-time residents. There are large areas of beach front that are still in their natural state (I hope they stay that way but it is hard to believe that they will), as well as several large wetland areas in the interior that are the home to thousands of migratory and resident birds, including egrets, herons, and ducks of assorted stripes, frigate birds, kingfishers, mocking birds, etc. There is good snorkelling in several places on the island, including right in front of the hotel and a beautiful unoccupied beach at the far end of the island (Point of Sand). Snorkellers can also go out with the dive boat to visit spots on the North side of the island.

Around the hotel, the natural environment is pristine. A large number of hermit crabs and geckos make their homes right on the grounds, along with "Stubby," the iguana that lost part of his tail, and other critters.

A remarkable 80 percent of the guests are repeat visitors, which is perhaps the best indication of how this place is viewed by its guests. During my visit, several of the guests had made as many as 11 visits to the resort.

Thank-you Gladys, Ingrid, Nigel, Peter, Ed, Dianne, and Cam for a most memorable dive trip! I will be back.

“The best place EVER!”

We just got back from a 8 night stay at Pirate's Point. This was our 3rd time back and definitely not our last!!! As an experienced travel agent of over 21 years in the industry, people will ask me where my favorite place is, and it is Pirate's Point Resort in Little Cayman! PPR feels like a family retreat and everyone there is your family member. Owner, Gladys Howard and her staff go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and right at home! The rooms are comfortable and quite large, but we hardly spend any time in them, as the weather is so beautiful and the hammocks are so inviting, why stay in? One of my favorite things about the resort is you feel like you are "getting away from it all". With no TV, no radios, & no phones in your room, it is easy to relax and disconnect from the hectic pace of life back home. There is a small clock in your room, if you choose to look at it, and there is internet service available in the bar if you choose to use it, but I recommend not using either. The food at PPR is the best! Chefs, Cam & Diane use Gladys's recipes and their own personality's to make mealtime at PPR a mouthwatering experience. Especially the desserts, worth EVERY calorie! Diving, our primary focus of the trip, is just the best. The dive boat, the Yellow Rose, is a 42 ft Newton. It is very spacious and everyone keeps their own space the whole week. They have nice snacks and drinks for surface intervals. A big camera table and a head. The dive team, Gay, Nigel, Peter, & Ingrid are not only great people, but offer advice to make your diving better and their vast scuba knowledge and attention to detail will make your week of diving fun, educational, & safe. They allow long bottom times so you can really enjoy the walls, reefs, and marine life longer.. just come back to the boat with at least 500psi!! The water was nice and warm and Bloody Bay is just amazing diving! Our group of 17 Pirate's from Cape Cod, came specifically for Pirate's Week! We entered a float in the Pirate's Parade that we made from debris we collected from the beach. Our result, the pirate ship, the Black Pearl, complete with Pirate's & Wenchs galore! Truly an amazing creation, if I don't say so myfself! We won 1st place this year for Pirate's Point and we are VERY proud of it!! I can't say enough about PPR. I have made friends and memories that will last me forever, Gladys, Gay, Ed, Peter, Nigel, Ingrid, Diane, Cam, Valda, & Debbie are like extended family to me! You know when you shed a tear about leaving, you've had a good time! I can not wait till our return to our home away from home!!!!!!!
