“enjoyed our stay”

Ocean Club West

Jun 30, 2008

we received a great deal on our room, 7 nights for the price of five, as this time is considered off season, also, we had a fifth person in the room at no additional charge (sofa bed in living room). The room and the property all seemed very well kept. Very clean, and everything in good working order. We had an oceanfront 3rd floor room(no elevators). The porches are all screened, but there really were no bugs to speak of. Grace Bay Beach is definitely the best beach I've ever seen. Powdery soft white sand, crystal clear turquoise water that barely gave a chill, no real waves or currents, so great for kids. The property had it's own umbrella, and there were plenty of them at this time of year. It's so sunny you really do need shade. I thought that the layout of the pool was great. It's actually a loop, but the edges are curved in an out in a varying pattern, creating many small seating areas with plantings between so you had some privacy and some shade if you wanted it. The staff in all areas was very friendly, and eager to go out of their way to help with any question or request. The open air restaurant by the pool was just ok. We walked down the beach (turn right leaving the steps down to the beach) one hotel over to Grace Bay club's Grille Rouge pool/beachside restaurant for much better food and service.
Of note, the Gecko shuttle is no longer in service, so if you don't rent a car you're going to spend a fortune on taxi's. Most of the taxi's that we rode in drove too fast, and took too many chances for my liking, but it seemed like pretty much everyone on the island was driving the same way. No traffic lights, lots of rotarys.
There's very little shopping nearby. There are no vending machines at ocw. The convenience store at Ocean Club (free shuttle) had very limited stock. The IGA was very expensive, as was the convenience store. If you can, buy some inflatable floats at home to use in the ocean. They're available within walking distance of ocw, but much more expensive there than at home.

“Ok, but nothing special”

Ocean Club West

We stayed at OCW for 2 weeks with an infant and a toddler and had a decent time, though it wasn't a memorable holiday by any stretch of the imagination.

The condo pretty much had everything that you would need to survive (i.e. washer/dryer, pots/pants, etc). However, it is nothing to write home about and it certainly showing its age. Unlike a proper hotel/resort, it appears that the condo owners at OCW have a pretty strong incentive to keep repairs to a minimum. For example, when we reported a faulty sofa-bed, rather than fixing it, staff just brought in a new bed. (Guaranteed tha the next guest that uses the sofa bed will have the same complain).

The pool is ok and kid-friendly (though it can be a bit dirty), but there were plenty of chairs/towels. There is bar/restaurant on-site, which is ok, but I think you are better off going next door to Grace Bay Club (just next door), for just a marginal increase in price. In terms of the beach, whilst the Grace Bay is certainly nice, it certainly isn't one of the "most beautiful" beaches in the world, and it is packed with hotels/condos. I still don't get what the fuss is all about.

Service is, at best, average. Whilst some of the staff are friendly and nice, the bulk of them are just going through the motions. If you go to Grace Bay Club you can see the massive difference in service levels. (I guess you get what you pay for). However, what is very sad is that this lack of interest, appears to be permeate throughout the island, particularly amongst the locals (aka The Belongers or, in my book, "The Grumpy Crowd").

We did a fair amount of cooking and, as mentioned elsewhere, groceries at IGA (which seems to be about the only show in town) are relatively pricey for what they are. (If you are coming from the UK, as a point of reference, expect to get Tesco quality at Waitrose prices). On the plus side, however, they are pretty well stocked, particularly for babies (i.e. baby food, diapers, etc, etc).

If you are based in the US, I can see the attractions of Turks. However, if you are based in Europe, frankly I wonder why you would want to go to Turks when you could go to the Med or the Middle East. The only reason I can think of is that, in comparison, it isn't as hot in June/July and with the dollar so weak, it might be cheaper holiday. Seller.

“Roachfest at the Ocean Club West”

Ocean Club West

My family and I just returned from a very disappointing stay at
the Oceab Club West. There were HUGE roaches in our room,
and when we called to complain, the staff did nothing.
The management at this hotel could care less.
The windows have no glass, just wood louvers. There are screens on the windows, but they are full of holes due to
poor maintenance. This allows mosquitos and gnats to get
into your room. We are all covered with mosquito bites.
I called several times and politely asked to be moved to another
room - nothing doing. The lack of glass on the windows also
makes this a very noisy place. We were up until 2:00 am
one night due to a boisterous group at the pool. Noise travels
here very easily.
The linens are thin and threadbare - not very nice to sleep on.
The pool was filthy for most of our stay. There was also
a lot of water on the floor caused "by the ac unit in the room
below us. "After many calls to the front desk/maintenance,
we were told that there was nothing that could be done.
The lack of action by the management to take care of
problems was very troubling.
On the positive side,
the beach here is beautiful. There were plenty of chairs
poolside and on the beach, and plenty of towels also.
We had dinner at the Gecko Grill and found it to be lovely.
We have been to Provo before, and will go back, but
we will NEVER stay at the Ocean Club West again.

“Fabulous Hotel, Fabulous Island!”

Ocean Club West

5 of 5 stars

We stayed at OCW for one week in early May - we had a 3 bedroom condo and LOVED IT! There were 5 adults and 1 11mos old in our party - we ALL had a fabulous time. The condo's are so well stocked with everything you need from pots & pans, dishes, can openers, serving utensils, soap, sponges - everything - and very clean. We were right on the beach and it was a perfect spot for us. The wrap-around screened in porch made eating outside a delight (no bugs!) and there's not much better then eating breakfast while listening to the ocean waves! The staff was friendly as were the guests. And, it was not overly crowded as we just missed their "high" season, which was great because you could get into restaurants and find a spot on the beach with no problem at all. The beach and water are just beautiful - everything you'd ever want!

One thing to note - food on the island is extremely expensive. We're already planning to go again next year and now we know to bring basics (non-perishables) with us. It's worth lugging an extra suitcase with basics - you'll save yourself a lot of money.

I highly recommend this resort for anyone - families, singles, newlyweds - you'd all have a great time at OCW. We can't wait to return next year!

We stayed at OCW for a week & had the best vacation EVER! We were celebrating our 10th anniversary & they upgraded our room to pool view right next to the ocean & even gave us a bottle of wine with a card. The resort was fantastic....every amentity you could want from washer/dryer in the suite, to every kitchen appliance imaginable. Hotel staff was great... always helpful, able to answer questions & do what was necessary to make the customer happy. On site restaurants had great food, decent prices & the views were to die for! Would also recommend Hemingways & Tiki Hut for the views & food. Took advantage of free shuttle to other property which had a convenience store as well. Snorkeling at Smith's Reef by Turtle Cove was great...walked right down the beach & swam out to corals, fish galore, urchins & starfish everywhere! Tina's Taxi Service took us everywhere, reliable, friendly & safe. Caicos Dream Tours all day excursion to other islands, snorkeling, conch & sanddollar diving & huge lunch on the beach was worth every penny. We are already planning our next vacation & will definitely be going to Provo & staying at Ocean Club West!
