In June we took a family vacation to OCW for a week. It was a very enjoyable vacation if you like to lay on the beach and hang out by the pool everyday. The beach was beautiful. The water is very clear, with not too much of a current, and warm. The beach sand was also nice because it was soft and fine. There were plenty of chairs and umbrellas on the beach for guests to use. The pool at the resort was very unique. It was in the shape of a big loop, with many plants, chairs, and umbrellas providing you with shade and privacy. After spending a few hours at the pool or the beach you will be looking for some shade.
In comparison to the other resorts on the island, OCW's prices are cheaper and the quality reflected that. We had a third floor, two bedroom, beach front room. The views from the huge screened in porch were beautiful. There was a palm tree in front of the porch that did hinder the view a bit. Our room was not as clean as we would prefer, but was tolerable. Everything in the room was working, with the exception of a broken towel rack. The sofa bed was very uncomfortable, however the regular beds were fine. The shower water in the second bedroom was cold if someone was using the shower in the other bathroom. It was nice to have a fully stocked kitchen in the room. We usually ate breakfast there, to save some money.
The resort itself was OK. The gardens are very well maintained and everyone working at the resort was very friendly and helpful. It is one of the smallest resorts on the island. We liked the fact that it was very quiet there, although it was low season. We did not use the spa at OCW. We did visit the spa at Grace Bay Club which was relaxing and worth the money! OCW does not provide free shuttle service to anywhere besides their sister resort. Consequently you will need to rent a car or take taxis everywhere. We spent a lot of money on taxis, that gave us many dangerous rides. If you do take a taxi, we suggest using Tina's Taxi Service. OCW has four computers that you can use free of charge and they all have access to the internet. There are no vending machines at OCW and the on site restaurant/bar closes pretty early. It is a good idea to buy drinks and some food at the grocery or convenience store to keep in your room. All the food on the island is expensive, but the restaurants were really not any more expensive than what we are use to in the Northeast.
The restaurant at the resort was not that great (Seaside Cafe). The dining service was poor most times, but the bar service was good. We ate at the Grill Rouge several times because the food and service was much better. Grill Rouge restaurant is next door to OCW at the Grace Bay Club resort. We also ate at Hemmingways, which was very good and moderately priced. I highly recommend this restaurant, but make reservations. Tiki Hut is another good place. it is a nice casual atmosphere with great prices. The Gecko Grill was good, but over priced. Sharkbites was OK, nothing special. Again a casual atmosphere on the water. We did not see any sharks that night. We tried fried conch. It is very chewy, and tastes like fried clams. One night we ordered pizza from PIZZA~ PIZZA. It took an hour for delivery and the pizza was over cooked. If you decide to order, call an hour before you want to eat.
There are not many things to do on the island. Shopping is very limited. We did do para-sailing and rode on the banana boat. Look for Max walking up and down the beach advertising these two excursions. It was a bit cheaper than the others and a very good time. If you para-sail you will be able to see the reefs from the air. Another day, we chartered the Fair Play fishing boat from Silver Deep. Silver Deep is the dive shop associated with OCW. The trip was well worth the money. Arthur was our captain and Peter was his mate. We caught only three fish that day, but the sites of the island and ride on the boat were great. Another excursion that we booked was the Glow Worm tour. A few nights after a full moon, the Glow Worms mate and light up the ocean coves. We took the tour with Outback Adventures via Captain Bill, who is quite the character. The boat is a big party barge. It was very easy to get sea sick (if you are prone to motion sickness). The Glow Worms light up for about 5 minutes. We expected to see a lot more worms than we had. If we had to go again we would probably book this tour with another company.
Overall, we had a good time. It is a great place to go if you want to relax and hang out by the water. It felt nice to be in the warm weather with a beach right outside the room.
