“Awesome Experience!!!!”

Wow!!! is how my husband and I would describe our stay at the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort. My husband was traveling on business to St. Thomas (me on vacation:-)) for a conference and when he went to secure reservations at the Wyndham they were booked so the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort was the the over-flow hotel. We were leary about the Bolongo because we had never heard of it. I viewed their website to find out more and what they had to offer. Still we were uneasy about staying there but said we'll give it a try. Glad we did! The Bolongo Bay Beach Resort was the best! All of the people there were awesome to say the least. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Akim with warm welcomes & rum punches:-) The accomodations were better than we expected. We had a spacious ocean-view room which afforded us a spectacular view of the beach and ocean each morning which was breath-taking. They had a kitchenette complete with dishes, silverware, microwave and mini refrigerator. The food (breakfast - Ms. Viola, Carla and Priscilla) and dinner - Jamma and KiKi)) was great at the Lobster Grille (on the premises) and Iggies (lunch - K'Hania and dinner - Patrick) just a walk down the beach. (Carnival on Wed. night @ Iggies was truly a treat.) We had friends that stayed at other hotels during the same time say they wished they would have booked here. The Bolongo Bay Beach Resort is such an intimate and personable place to stay that we told friends back home that this is where we would definitely stay when traveling to St. Thomas and if they ever traveled to St. Thomas that's the place to stay. You have a choice of all-inclusive or the European plan. We did the European plan which was great. You could take snoreling lessons, paddle boat, or ride the water trikes at no additional expense. We met Paul Doumeng (the owner) and the rest of the staff and they were all very down-to-earth & personable and made sure we had what we needed. Our room was cleaned thoroughly and fresh towels and linens were provided each day (thanks Natalie for a job well-done.) It was just so peaceful there, we didn't want go home. Oh, and if you want to get around the island, you should have the drivers of Islander Taxi (especially Mulley & Delita) show you the town. They are awesome!!! This trip was one to put at the top of our list. So if anyone is leary about staying at the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort because you may not have heard of it before, we are here to tell you to try it...you WILL love it and the people.

We found this small resort on the internet-went there for our honeymoon. We returned 2 yrs later, and were surprised to find that 80% of the excellent staff remembered us and welcomed us by name. A fairly small, family run resort, it offers one of the best values for your money that we have found. All rooms-(65 of them) face the Carribean witha pleasant breeze--you really don't need the AC. April and May are the best times to go--the temperature stays at 85 during the day-79 at night, and water temp at 82. Do the week-long stay-all inclusive-and their all inclusive is that--ALL inclusive! No restrictions on brands of beverages, and a day trip to St John's Island on a 53 ft sailboat,as well as an evening cruise through the capital waters. Lots of pirate history there, and we recommend a day trip to the British Islands as well. Check out their site at Bolongo Bay.com. If you require elevators and room service--spend several hundred dollars more at a different resort--If you want to have fun--this is where people go to have fun. We have sent several friends there, and all plan to return.

Excellent getaway. Food was very good. It was a delight just reading the menu. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner were all good. For breakfast they have everything from simple pancakes and french toast to a fresh fruit platter, eggs benedict, hash and eggs, all very good and cooked fresh to order. Better than a buffet. Lunch at Iggys was a choice of crab cake, hamburger, portabello mushroom fries (yum and a huge portion), mahi mahi sandwich (also yum) and other items. Lunch at the bar was club sandwich (yum), and other sandwich items. Dinner at Lobster Grill was a delight. Appetizers like lobster monti cristo (newburg type thing), lobster bisque, chorizo empenana, lobster or shrimp cocktail, A Bolongo salad with heart of palm -a true delight. Entrees were lobster (note spiny warm water lobster-no claws, small tail) but good anyway, Steak, shrimp scampi, seafood paella, Pasta ( a little starchy), Duck (hubby enjoyed throughly). Also, Robert the Chef will come out at about 4-5 and show off two dinner specials. You do have to go to dinner early to get those. He had scallops one night and I missed out. But he is a great cook.

The bar and swim up bar are great also. Henry, Alex and a woman bartender were all very nice. Never a crowd anywhere. Always a spot on the beach or poolside. I think everyday hubby and I were the only ones at swim up bar. No seats at the swim up though - you have to stand but that's OK.

The beach is a little rocky bring your water shoes or buy em if you go here. It is a good walking beach. You are in a little cove so the water is nice and calm. There was a big outcroping of rocks to one side. You can walk to it and see a lot of sea urchins.

Don't take the snorkle trip. (i mean the one offered by the dive club) it is basically a trip for divers and you just happen to be there. You will not leave on time. You will sit on the boat sweating to death and leave at 1:30. Not 1:00. Three people got sick on the trip because of heat prostration. Then while you are in the water, the two adults are down with the divers if you need help forget it.

You will have to "sign" for all your meals and drinks on all inclusive. If you get a bottle of water "please sign", if you get drinks all day they will hold the tab until the end of the day but please sign. So in that way it is different than other all inclusives we have stayed at. You just drink and walk away, eat and walk away at the other places. Here it is like going out at home but instead of paying you have to sign for what you had. Not sure if they do that because they don't trust the staff or if it is to figure how much of a tip they get. You don't tip here, it is automatically given to the staff out of what you are charged. The first two days we didn't tip but then hubby started feeling guilty and gave $2-3 tips. We always tipped in Mexico.

Do take the all day cruise on the heavenly days boat. Totally different than the dive trip. We didn't go and regret it. They take you to St. John and it is a really nice catarmaran with a huge sail.

The view from in front of Iggy's is better. The water sport people are great. If you want to snorkel off the beach you will only see a few fish. If you go out to the end of the bouys you will see turtles!! We saw one while on the kayak. We are too chicken to go out very far snorkeling.

I very highly recommend this hotel. We have been to the huge resorts in Mexico and this was a delightful change from the crowds. It is very relaxing. No dress up for dinner crap. Shorts for men, a regular dress or shorts for women for dinner. Food made to order (and you can taste it) instead of a big buffet. Small hotel with great staff. We stayed 5 days and wish we stayed longer. Also go with the all inclusive. It is expensive there. Most dinner entrees were like $35 - 40. Appetizer $8-10. Drinks mixed $7. It will add up. Also, driving around this place is incredible. The roads are like driving along a cliff. I had no idea the island is so mountainous. Twisty and all blind turns. No way - AND stay on the "wrong" side of the road. I couldn't imagine having to navigate all that to save $20 bucks. But come to think of it you won't if you take a taxi. Taxi to town for 2 is $16. One Way!! So to get to a place to eat and back you have already spent $32!! Just go the all inclusive route and enjoy your stay.

My daughter and I recently stayed at Bolongo Bay for a week. The beach was beautiful, the snorkeling was awesome, the drinks were fantastic, and the food was fabulous! The staff at Bolongo made us feel welcome and offered advice on how to really get the most out of our stay. I would return to St. Thomas and the Bolongo Bay any time. Thanks so much!

“Bolongo Bay Beach Resort--Amazing Honeymoon! Laura and Thomas, Bradford PA”

Bolongo Bay Beach Resort

5 of 5 stars
Bradford, PA
Jun 5, 2008

Despite some bad reviews I read about Bolongo Bay Beach Resort, we stayed at Bolongo from May 27-June 1, 2008 for our honeymoon. I am so glad we ignored the reviews and stayed there. We could not have asked for a better honeymoon. The staff are extremely friendly, outgoing, and helpful. From the guys that meet you at the door, to the bartenders and wait staff, everyone was so nice. There are beach activities available during the day and the beach hut staff are also very outgoing, friendly, and willing to help you with all activities. Getting into the water is rocky, but if you ask at the beach hut, they have water shoes for you to use. The sunset sail on Heavenly Days is a must--the captain and crew are great and there certainly isn't a shortage of yummy rum-filled drinks! Taxis are expensive, at $8 per person, one way, but there is enough to do on the resort, we only went into town once. Iggies Restaurant is good--it's bar like food (sandwiches, etc.). The iguanas and lizards visit you while you eat, but they do not over-run the place, so they weren't bad at all. The Lobster Grille is more of a fine-dining restaurant. The bartenders there (we enjoyed Lawson and Harry) are wonderful and fun to talk to. The food is very good, my husband enjoyed it very much. I, on the other hand, do not eat meat or seafood, so finding something I liked was difficult. Chef Robert was wonderful and said he would be willing to make me a special dinner. That was great, but I would have felt more comfortable just being able to order something off the menu. The rooms are simple and the showers aren't that great--but if you are in St. Thomas, why would you be in the room for a long time, anyway? Other than having more non-seafood/meat choices on the menu, I have absolutely no complaints about our stay at Bolongo Bay and we plan to return. Overall, our honeymoon at Bolongo was amazing and an unforgettable experience.
