The best feature of this hotel is the ocean views from almost all the rooms and it's close enough to hear the waves too. Be advised some of the lower floors may have views blocked by trees. Also, the floors are numbered starting at 10 going to 22. The lobby is on the 18th floor, our room was #1721.
July is off season with temps around 90F and very humid. The room A/C worked quietly and very well. The rooms have plenty of space and includes a balcony with a hammock and 2 chairs.
This hotel was built in the 70s with concrete walls, tile flooring and no carpeting. You will clearly hear loud noise from the hallways and some from adjacent rooms. The mattresses have thin useless toppers and are the hardest I have ever tried to sleep on. I would not stay here again because of this and this is the primary reason for the low rating. When I complained about it the response was, "be sure to mention that on the customer comment card". If you use the in room bottled water or coffee it will cost you $5 each. We made one brief local call and that cost $10. I would not have a problem with this if the prices were at least posted. We tried the in room internet and found it would not retrieve email, we complained and they removed the charge. Use the business center for internet it's cheaper and faster.
The first night we had dinner in the Portofino restaurant and it was excellent. Dinner for two with a bottle of wine, desert and tip was $150. Based on the quality of food and first class service this was a bargain. We would do it again in a heartbeat.
The breakfast buffet was OK at best but over priced at $20. We had much better meals in town and they were cheaper including the cab fare. For Mexican food I recommend Tamales y Atoles AnY (Annies), Morelos and Cafe Glob's (Globes). Glob's is one of the few air conditioned places. The Galeon restaurant at the Ixtapa marina was very good for dinner at waters edge. Keep an eye out for Pancho the crocodile. The La Perla restaurant on Playa La Ropa (great beach) has just OK sea food and is not recommended.
For a tour of the area we hired a taxi at $25/hr. We went to Barra de Potosi, and Petatlan (Petatlan is a nice place to shop for good prices with little if any of the aggressive selling from vendors).
A good cab driver can make the difference. We asked about the "iguana zoo" and the driver said skip it and took us to someones property just off the main road that had a large tree with at least 60 wild iguanas of all sizes in it. Our cab driver's name was Jorge Sanchez, cab #556, he did an excellent job spoke English well and got a big tip to match. Any bellmen should be able to locate him for you.
If you are concerned about safety you should know that the Las Brisas' bellmen that call the cabs will make a record of the cab#, time and place you are going to. Also, there are police check points along the major highways that the cabs must pull into. The police will note the time and cab# at the check point.
Many workers in Mexico make very low wages (maids $7 per 8 hour day) and most work very hard and rely on tips as part of their income. So don't be shy on tipping, it's appreciated.
If we visit Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo again we would probably find accommodations on Playa La Ropa and go when the weather is cooler.
