We had a great stay at the Barcelo from June 21-25. I'll try not to restate too much what other posters have already said, but from what I experienced, they were dead on the mark - clean rooms but in need of updating, good food, friendly attentive staff, etc etc. We had just come from a fun-filled 7 days at Club Med Ixtapa where we were on the go the whole time and found the Barcelo to be a very relaxing, layed back place to just hang out and enjoy the beach and the sun. (By the way, although CM and Barcelo are both all-inclusive, they are completely different experiences - like comparing apples to oranges - so if you are contemplating which of the two to try, I'd be happy to answer any questions if you'd like to email me). The beach here is very nice and we enjoyed walking it each morning after breakfast and again after dinner at sunset. Terrific waves - our 7 year old son had a blast "wave riding" as he called it - and we didn't find the undertow too terribly strong. Pool - huge and very warm, and the pool near the Palapa restaurant is only about 3 1/2 feet deep so you can relax when the kids are in there. Each and every day was spent going back and forth from the pool to the beach - all day long. It was rough, but somebody had to do it, and it was a great way to wind up our trip to Mexico! Lots of Mexican families there vacationing as well - they probably made up about 80 percent of the guests there. I never saw any organized children's program there, and never actually explored it but they do have activites for kids such as an air hockey table, fussball, pool, ping pong tables, ceramic painting, and a small playground. Our son, who is an only child, made some quick friends there which kept him happy and busy - in fact one was a boy his age from Mexico and despite not understanding each others' language, they had a blast together. And then there was Daisy from BC who quickly became his new best friend once Luis left. One thing I haven't seen mentioned...there are self serve ice cream machines at the Palapa restaurant and pool bar restaurant (Caracol I believe it's called). It was a great pick-me-up for our son and the friends he made whenever they found their energy waning - "hey, why don't you go get yourselves some ice cream". In their wildest dreams they'd never get to eat that much ice cream at home, so we became instant heroes! Regarding restaurants - we never made it to Don Quixote although talked to others who had good meals there. The Veranda (lobby) restaurant had a pasta station a few nights that was really neat - you had a choice of about 6 ingredients, 2 different pastas and 3 or 4 sauces and they would make it for you while you waited. They did something similar another night with stir fry. Great burgers at the outdoor restaurants as you no doubt have already read. Poolside and beachside drink service was spotty for us but not a big deal, and the drinks were very strong at times - so be careful! (Not that that's a bad thing...)! Try the Barcelo cocktail - we didn't find out about it until towards the end of our stay. Refreshing and tasty. And as a previous poster mentioned, do be sure to have a shirt if your a male or some kind of swimsuit cover or skirt if your a female if you plan on eating at any of the outside restaurants otherwise, you'll definitely be given a look. Heard that the 5th floor is a non-smoking floor, so if that is a concern of yours be sure to request a room on that floor. We're not smokers and found our room on the 7th floor to be okay as far as that goes, but you could definitely smell cigarettes along the hallway corridor going to and from your room. There is a photographer that goes around the property all day taking photos that are downloaded daily in the lobby and available for you to purchase for about $12 per 6x8 photo - not cheap, but we parted with some money when we saw one we liked. Efficient check-in and check-out and we were able to get a late check-out for 1pm. Heard that if they don't have your room booked right away you can get a 2pm check out. All in all, I have to say that we had a surprisingly great time at the Barcelo. While the rooms aren't the best, the atmosphere, restaurants, and beach experience more than make up for it and we would definitely, and will hopefully go back again. And soon I hope!
