“We'd love to return”

Real Playa del Carmen

May 13, 2008

Our preference was for a hotel that actually seems to be part of Mexico, not an isolated bit of North America sitting on the beach. We had a great time staying at the Real. The buffet food was excellent, the rooms were clean and pleasant, the staff were very friendly. It's close to the interesting stuff on 5th Avenue without being noisy, and just a short walk to the wonderful public beach. The lobby and beach club bars were great. Not everything was perfect (the fridge in our room didn't keep things very cold), but the positive features of the Real far outweigh any minor problems. We'd love to return next year... saving our pennies

“Wondeful little hotel”

Real Playa del Carmen

May 10, 2008

My husband, teenaged son and I stayed for 7 days. We had a wondeful time and would recommend the hotel to those who are open to new experiences, and not set on luxury standards. The staff were very warm and friendly, and spoke adequate english, and worked hard to make sure our son had a great time. Our room was well airconditioned, safe worked well and bed was comfortable, shower and toilet worked fine. Pool was small but inviting, food was good, but not fantasitc. Concerns - fold out couch was not comfortable - but my son just slept on the couch itself. We sometimes had times getting enough clean towels for the three of us. But the positives greatly outweighed the negatives. The hotel is close to the public beach - which is amazing. The beach club was great. Grounds are beautiful. While we were at the hotel - the lounge bar switched from plastic cups to glassware. We'd definitely go back.

My boyfriend and I went to Mexico for a romantic getaway and found anything but that at Real Playa del Carmen. Upon check-in our room resembled a small dungeon--Small window, broken shower head, clogged toilet, ineffective air conditioner and the safe that was non-functional. A neighborhood dog howled all night. We voiced our complaint to the apathetic staff. They switched us to a new room which was much better. It was slightly bigger with more windows but the air cond still did not work that well!--which is terrible in 90 degree weather. We tried to upgrade to the Gran porto Real but it was full. Every morning, the housekeeping staff has their cleaning products strewn about the hall--which is a complete eyesore!!! One day,the housekeeping staff forgot to clean our room. When I called to merely get fresh towels--it took 5 phone calls and 1 hour to finally get pool, beach towels for our shower!!! Thank goodness we were leaving the next day!!! The food was awful! Not much variety and poor quality. The location on 5th Avenue was great --close to all the action of bars/restaurants. The beach club was very relaxing with a very nice barstaff and free lounge chairs. Beware: the hotel serves all of the drinks in plastic "dixie cups" that are basically 3 sips!!! The open air lobby bar was a fabulous way to take advantage of the warm mexican weather. we enjoyed having drinks there. The hotel pool wasquite gross with broken tiles and no room for lounge chairs around the pool. Bottom line: nice staff, bad hotel--spend a few more dollars to get a much better experience!!!! WE WILL NOT BE BACK!!!!

“Left after one night at the Real”

Real Playa del Carmen

Apr 25, 2008

My husband, son (age 17) and I stayed at the Real playa del Carmen for one night of our 7 night stay. It was the worst experience ever. The room was dirty, the bathroom toilet first plugged and then after they "fixed" it did not flush. The room smelled dirty and musty and it was very dingy. As far as the food is concerned, there was not much of a selection and it was of poor quality. The grounds are practically non-existent and not well kept. The swimming pool and surrounding area were completely unacceptabale. The pool is small and there is no place to sit.
If you are looking for any kind of atmosphere you will not find it here. I have never walked out on a hotel but I could not stay in this place. My 17 year old son was disgusted with it as well. He refused to stay there. We finally told the desk staff we were leaving and asked if we could possibly get a room a the Gran Porto Real. I have to admit that the staff went out of their way helping us upgrade to the Gran Porto. Thank God a room was available although it cost a fortune on top of already paying for 3 adults all inclusive but that only lets you know how terrible the resort really is that we couldn't stay there even though it was paid for. Our stay at the Gran Porto Real was fantastic and I would highly recommend it.

“Very Tropical Resort”

Real Playa del Carmen

My husband and I stayed here Feb 26-March 11 2008.We had e-mail the hotel in advance to let them know that it was our anniversary on the 29th and we had booked a standard room but was wondering if we could be upgraded to a 1st floor suite. They e-mail us back and said that this would not be a problem.upon arriving we had to wait till 3 to check in and then they put us in a standard room.when asking about the upgrade I was told we would have to wait for the next day and we could move around 3. I went to the front desk at 7am and the front desk clerk move us to a 1st floor suite immmediately. It was a beautiful room.Big and spacious with a nice patio. It was very close to the restaurant.A couple days we ate breakfast on on patio. It was great.
we found the food and the drinks were very good here. This was the 2nd time we have been in mexico. The last time was 4 years agobut it was about 20 minutes away from Playa del Carmen. The margaritas were great.we found the buffet had better food than the a la carte .We ate at the a la carte twice.Beakfast had many choices, egg, bacon, sausages, pancakes, breads, smoothies, juices and even fafitas .
Lunch at the beach bar was only nachos and another kind of snack. We would usually walk back to the hotel or take the shuttle to have lunch.Great hamburger a couple of days and many other chioces a well.salads were good. service was also good.I found breakfast and lunch had better food than supper .they also have a 24 hours snack bar.It was good also if you wanted nachos sometimes hotdogs ,soft serve ice cream was very good.
5th ave is great in the evening for looking around .This hotel is on the end of 5th ave.Very quiet at night.A 12 minute walk to the beach which we didn't mind .The night show were ok.I liked the mexican shows better than bingo or those silly shows that get guest to go up on stage. It was great having the show start by 9 :30 and right in the restaurant.
The gardens at this hotel are beautiful.Sometimes if we got tired of the beach we would come back here to rest .
Front desk staff very nice especially Edwardo.
we also liked Alex at the beach bar.We liked the beach but wished they had more shades area and wished they would clean the public wasfrooms more often.
We would like to return to this hotel again. We thought it was a great deal for the price we payed with Air canada in October.wonderful staff, very good food and drinks,,nice rooms and I didn't even mind that it wasn't on the beach.
